Hello all, new to this forum , been looking it over for a while now. I bought a 72 nova about 2 months ago , requiring almost full resto. Iam replacing every bushing in the car, now wear ial completely confused is the rear leafs . My car is reg as a 72 nova ss, but has a 8.2 rear end, with mono leaf set up , but the leaf springs have 3 leaves? the leaf brackets are mono leaf, but the hole wear the shocks attack are broke off. So iam trying to figure out first what bracket i should be using as replacements, ans what bushing kit i need. Iam pretty confused:(. I did read a company JC witney built a 3 leaf direct replacement for the single mono leaf, but iam not sure if thats what i have. Iam aware a 72ss came with a 8.5 rear with multi , no idea why mine is different. I did contemplate , just welding the holes on the leaf brackets closed and re drilling them ? any suggestions? I just registered on this site , i will attempt to attach a pic when i figure it out

Thanks Dave all ur input is greatly appreciated:hurray:, so i can use the rear end untill it breaks lol . Still not sure about the spring set up . What do i have , mono leaves or multi , the lower leaf bracket is a mono leaf , not sure about whats welded to the rear end. ( looks like a bought a hodg podg wack together car ) I did not budget to replace the rear end , so if i can use what i have unitll funds get better and replace it down the road ied prefer to go that direction . But again , iam not sure what leaf bracktes i need and what bushings

Ehy Thanks Dave for all the input , so what is it that i have? reading between the lines i am guessing i should just rip that rear end out and replace it :(:( . possibly sell it and buy a ford 9" and be done with it :hurray:. If you are able to tell me what rear end i have that would be great;) so i can put it up for sale and know what iam selling

The rear end you have is very narrow compared to what should be under the car (2-1/2 inches narrower). This will move wheels and tires in and probably end up rubbing the inner wheel tubs and what passes for a frame in your car. The 8.2 inch ten bolt has the same size 28 spline axles as the 8.5 inch rear end, but that is the end of the comparison. Everything about the rear end is smaller and weaker than the 8.5 inch you should have.

Well i believe you are correct, after some web searching, i believe i have a 64-67 nova rear end set up . Now is this a bad thing?? also i believe the 3 leaf spring kit in it is a direct replacement for the mono leaf. So i can only assume i will require standard mono leaf bushings, and mono leaf mounting brackets?

Sounds like some previous owner pulled the rear end out of your car and stuck it in another (my guess is a 1967-'69 Camaro). He then put the smaller older rear end under the Nova to be able to sell it. If you run the numbers stamped into the front passenger side tube (about in the middle) you can find out what it was out of.

Thanks Dave, so ya my nova has the "K" in the vin , but the rear end does not have the nubs indicating a 8.5 , also the rear springs are multi 3 leaves, but are mounted on mono brackets:confused::confused: So iam still not sure what exactly i have :( . Iam trying to order the full bushing kit but not sure what kit i need, also i have a guy who has a pair of multi leaf brackets i can buy but iam not 100% convinced there what i require, i will take a few more pictures of the car and postem up ,

The SS Nova had multi leaf springs with a 12 bolt in 1971 which was one of the ways of separating a clone from a real one. In 1972 two things happened. Your SS nova has a K in the VIN designating the special 350 cid motor that separates a true SS from a clone in 1972. That is the only production year of all of the third gen Novas that can be identified by a tag on the car.

1972 was also the first year that the 8.5 inch rear ring gear Corporate rear end was introduced. All Novas regardless of style got the Corporate rear end in 1972-75. For 1976-'79 only V-8 Novas got the Corporate rear end, the six cylinder powered cars received a 7.5 inch ten bolt that was first used under the four cylinder Vega.

Your 1972 SS Nova should have multi-leaf springs if it is a SS, as the SS option included as part of the package a suspension upgrade (consisting of heavier duty springs, and shocks, and it added a front sway bar). The SS package didn't include a posi: though a lot of SS cars were ordered with their rear end stuffed with a posi unit.
