What year is the car?

My old 71 Nova had a green and a pink wire that when connected would light up the reverse lamps.

My car was also a stick shift car, and it was on the floor. Someone disconnected the linkage that would shift the column into a certain spot when the floor shift was put into reverse....and that certain spot on the column would make the reverse lights come on. The reverse lamp switch was on top of the column under the dash.

My solution to this was to tie the linkage hole on the column up so it wouldn't move. Not sure if this would be your problem or not but I'd check into this. Also check that your switch isn't sticking and/or shorted.
