Can anyone give me the correct procedure on the best way to install multi leaf spring on my 67 Nova. The new ones seem quite a bit longer just setting them next to the mono leaf springs I took out. Should I start at the front, the back, I'm not sure.

Hey Welcome to ya ;)

i can help you on this... after the old leafs are removed, install the front eye bushings in the new leafs, question, do you have std rubber bushings or polys ? if they're polys make sure you use dielectric grease and lubricate the bushings to prevent squeaking. after the bushings are installed install the front of the leaf in the perch. be very carefull when you install the front eye "Cup" bolt... make sure the cup is seated in the hole prior to tightening. don't cinch down/torque any bolts until the car is done and it's back on the ground. OK, now the front eye cup is installed, slide the differential onto the leafs and center it over the leaf spring center bolt. instal the leaf shock plates and loosly tighten the U bolts (U bolts recommended, not the factory Tee-bolts) the spring rubber pads you can dispose of, they'll not fit the factory mono perch with multi-leafs. install the shock plates, u bolts etc and center the bolt of leaf in the center hole on bottom of plate. jack up differential and with new bushings in the back of leafs, install the shackles remembering to again, lubricate all wear areas of bushings if polys.

reconnect e brake cable, fluid lines etc. i'd also recommend replacing the upper rear brake hose while you're under there, possibly changing diff gear oil while you're at it.

once everything is hung, bled and attached etc lower car on the ground and torque/tighten all bolts.

i think that'll do it, i don't think i forgot anything ;)

good luck to ya,

JR

question... what is "Quite a bit longer" ?

confirm the springs are the correct units, they should be very close to stock length. also, the big eye of spring goes forward ;)

I do it a little different. Unbolt the rear from the old springs and raise it off the springs and support on jack stands. Remove old springs and completely install new springs leaving the bolts loose. Then install upper pad in the perch, lower the rear onto the springs, install lower pad and plate. Tighten the U bolts to spec, remove the stands from under the frame and place the weight of the car on the stands under the rear and tighten the spring bolts. I find it easier to get the rear bolts into the frame and springs with out the weight of the differential hanging on them. If converting from mono to multi it is best to use a kit designed to do it correctly.

That sounds like a good way, John kinda cried a little about lifting the rear end and leaf into the mount by hand he wanted to use a jack but I just lifted it for him as I didn't have the time to wait for him to set up the jack:D:D

Thanks for all the help on this one guys. A couple of other questions. Someone suggested not using the rubber spring pads. The supplier says to use the bottom one only and they provided a small steel plate to use instead of the top one. Thoughts? Also, is it normal for the length of the multi leaf springs to be quite a bit shorter than the mono leaf springs I took out? Is this going to cause problems during the install? Thanks again for the help.

they might be the same length but the arc/curvature is different due to one being worn out. no it won't be an issue on installation due to the swing/arch of the rear shackles pivot.

as far as the pads go, even though i didn't use mine and had the plates mount flush like they did with the mono's with the pads... i think you should do as recommended by the manufacturer.

hope i helped,
