Default Quick Question About BBC Conversion

Well plans changed a little and we're going with a 496bbc over the original plan of a 377sbc. My question is, is it at all possible to keep the column shift (factory 6 cyl car), or will it need to be replaced with a floor shifter? From the looks of it the linkage will be right in the way of the headers. Thanks in advance. Dustin

If you purchase the right headers the linkage will clear. They are made both ways, but if you go with a real large primary tube a conversion to the floor may be necessary.

I've got a set of full length headers that I was planning on using do you think I would be better off using shorties? Also is it possible at all to modify the stock linkage to work with the full length headers?

here's a thread that references the parts needed for a BBC swap in a 3rd Genner Nova https://www.novas.net/forums/showthread.php?t=8433 i don't think you'll have an issue with the column shifter provided all the proper BBC parts are used for the installation.

there have been comments in the past regarding header interference with the steering gear but i don't recall any comments regarding the column shifter unless the header manufacturer's footnotes specifically state "Will not fit column shifter" in which case either a different header is needed or you swap to a floor shifter

i hope i helped

Sounds good, thanks for the info. I'll be setting the motor in shortly so I'm hoping everything goes as planned. The shift linkage was my only concern because I had never seen a big block car with a column shift. I'd like to keep it as stock appearing as possible, other than the motor of course.

Most all automatics were designed to be column shifted and that is what the header manufactures build the headers to fit (a stock car, not one that has been modified because they have no idea what you have done that the factory didn't).
