Welcome to the Team Chad!

You do know that Dick Harrell was a drag racer that converted stock L-78 396 motors in Camaros over to a 427 by swapping out the smaller bored 396 motor with an L-88 short block, while reusing the factory heads and intake (and distributor, and everything else on the motor) that he bought new at the local dealership owned by Bill Allen in Kansas City, Missouri. He only did !0 known cars in 1969 and one of the last ones that went across the block at Barrett-Jackson sold for over $243,0000 dollars.

The car was not a COPO factory car by the way like Don Yenko's COPO Camaros and Novas were (which were ordered from the factory built that way originally with the special permission of Vince Piggins) and had a paper trail that was well documented.

With Dick he was doing the same thing I was doing in Tampa. Though in my case I couldn't afford to start out with a brand new car so I bought a used four or five year old stripped down trade in six cylinder economy Nova or 6 cylinder three speed Camaros and built it from the frame up to support a L-88 427 service engine (called a crate motor now) with HD parts off of SS cars, Police Cars or even light trucks to make it a super street machine. I had a bunch of friends at the dealership (in this case Abraham Chevrolet) that were allowing me to buy parts at their cost, roam the High Performance parts bin, and bid on cars taken in on a trade so long as I had Abraham's name painted on the side of my race car.

As to your cars originality I couldn't begin to hazard a guess. I do know that it was a fairly common practice and one of our local Chevrolet dealerships had a 427 L-88 sitting in the show room that they would build a copy of and sell to anyone with CASH. (no financing and no warranty). David Heinz a local Corvette racer (Les Man, Wattkins Glen, Tour of France, Riverside, Sebring, et. al.) had a yellow one he bought from Ferman Chevrolet back in 1969. No one had a lock on the idea and engine swaps were common in my neck of the woods.

The 427 was factory rated at 425 horsepower for a 780 cfm single Holley four barrel, and 435 horse for the 908 cfm (converting two barrel cfm rating over to a four barrel rated cfm) 3x2 tri power set up found on the Corvette. The NHRA upped that by six percent but on the whole they where no were near 450 horse in stock trim. I was able to build a ProStock (circa 1969) that covered the quarter mile in 10.13 in a Camaro with a an over built L-88 which is close to 600 rear wheel horsepower. It wasn't stock.

The LS6 454 was 450 hp.

Why was this old thread revived?

Only "The Shadow" knows ....

I just try and point out to people obsessed with the good old days that the rest of the world has moved away from small displacement big blocks. Only ones still running a 7.0 liter now are driving new Corvettes. You want big power from a big block with todays gas you have to go Big.

Watch the link I provided above.....It is a 69 450HP Yenko Nova with what I assume is a L-88 for power.

Don Yenko made his own engines (being an engine builder) he contracted with Caterpillar to cast his own BBC blocks (they had his name "Yenko" that appeared above the timing chain). In 1969 he also contracted with Vince Piggins to buy a block of 60 COPO Camaros with a factory 427 installed. Before the first fifty had been dropped on his doorstep he realized that he couldn't pay for the order and scrambled to spread out the wealth contacting Dick Harrel, and Baldwin, and other Chevrolet dealerships to take them off his hands. There is a reason that the COPO 427 Camaros were only sold in 1969. It was a matter of economics.

After that debacle Yenko ordered Novas with the 370 horse 350 Corvette motors installed instead of the L-88 BBC in 1970 and 1971. He also didn't order them blocks of fifty or more because he knew it was a limited market. I know of no COPO L-88 in a Nova. That and the L-88 was only rated at 425 horse, not 450.
