Ignition timing affects the cooling. How are you controlling your timing? Electronically with a boost referenced ignition box or a vacuum model on your distributor?

The radiator is the obvious suspect. Do you have an aftermarket aluminum radiator? If so how big? Do you have a fan shroud? (if not why not?) Do you have a blown 496 big block powering your large seven blade fan; or relying upon a wimpy quarter horse electric fan with pencil thin plastic blades that bend out of shape? Are you sure you have the correct rotation water pump installed? (only a problem if you have a long water pump)

Finally when does it over heat? At idle? When cruising at normal traffic speeds? Are you sure your gauge is accurate by testing it with a pot of boiling water?

Even with a four inch wide cog belt you should have room for your fan and shroud.
