Default camshaft help 194 Inline six

I have a 1963 nova with a 194 inline six. my girlfriend got me a 262 cam from crower.I have never opened up a 6 so i thought i woud ask. Do i just take the crank pully off and take the cover and chain off to get to the cam like a V8? do the lifters come out from the side?If i take the grill and radiator out can i slide it out the front? Are there any tricky parts? anything helps
thanks for your time

Reilly

first let me ask... does this car run presently ? have you changed a camshaft in a small block Chevy before ?

if you've done the procedure in a SBC before then i'd think you could handle the sixer. if you've never done the job i'd HIGHLY recommend you buying a motor manual for the car and follow the step by step procedure to do the job.

if you're not really mechanically inclined or experienced... i'd recommend you NOT messing with it.

o yea done V8s not a SBC but SBF and SBM . was going to swap it out for a v8 but now thinking i may keep the 6, it runs strong. The big thing iam woried about is if i can slide the cam out the front. The cam looks like it sits lower and to the left unlike a V8 and know it will be longer then a v8cam. If I cant pull it straight out with out lifting the engine then I may wait as I dont want to stress the cam bearings

The cam will require removing the front of the car or pulling the motor as it is long, There is no chain, only two helical gears. The lifters come out the side inspection cover, and you will need to verify valve to piston clearance, as well as replacing the vale springs with the ones recommended by the cam grinder (it might require longer valves to get the springs installed at the correct height and seat pressure). Also may have to grind the rocker arm slot longer to clear the added lift.

The fuel pump and distributor will need to be removed also.

I'm guessing the core support will have to be removed also.

Core support is ok, just need to remove the radiator and the grill!...

On another note, the cam gear is pressed on the cam so you put the cam in the freezer overnight and heat up the cam gear(450*)and it'll slide right on!..

for sure ill try to get a pic up. I just got the car about 3 months ago from a place called GM salvage here in the bay area as i did not want it to be tore up for parts but it looks like is sat in a barn for years. I striped the inside layed nice new carpet but for the headliner dose any one know if i have to take out the front and rear windows.
and last if i got i nice intake and ran somthing like the ez efi setup(http://www.fuelairspark.com/ezefi/default.asp) dose that work well iam trying to stick with parts that would change over to a v8 if i was to ever go that way.

I also wanted to thank every one as I have been on lots of different forums when doing my fords or mopars . This by far is the best one I have seen. I have trouble with my spelling and hate posting but every one is always supper nice and helpful I know this is only my second post but just saying .Your advice is appreciated

Kyle an FYI to help you spell like a pro. Download and use Firefox for your browser. It installs all by itself and will import all of your favorites from IE. The program has an automatic spell checker, but do not tell anyone I use it they think I know how to spell
