Default Trying to identify a '65 Nova SS

I'm trying to help a friend identify whether or not the car he recently purchased is a true 1965 SS. The number on the VIN plate does not match the number on the hidden VIN that was located by a state inspector. the hidden VIN did not show the 2nd and 3rd digits. Can an SS be identified by the consecutive production numbers of the VIN? Is there something similar to a Marti report that Ford owners can purchase for a car that can be purchased for a Nova?

If anyone can answer this question it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Welcome to the Team Owen!

A SS Nova from 1962 through 1967 is a body style that has no basis in performance (it could be ordered with four cylinder engine and a PoweGlide). Basically it states that it is a two door hard top body with bucket seats. This information is on the trim tag that can be removed and replaced with one you bought on line quite legally and in the VIN that can not be tampered with in any way under Federal Law. Many states have state laws (Florida is one) that will result in any car that has a modified or tampered VIN to be seized as a suspected product of a chop shop (stolen car). As such you loose any money you spent upon the car.

Hidden VIN's are used to ascertain the veracity of the VIN plate. If they differ then you have a tampered VIN, and evidence of a Federal crime. Who done it is to be discovered by the FBI: though there is a lot on their plate so you might not see that car body again for quite a while.

The only exception is a Rebuilt Title which states that the car no longer has an original title as it was surrendered when the car parts involved where totaled out. Some one collected these car parts and welded together a Frankenstein's monster of a car with a rebuilt title stating it's born date and who built it.

I'm suspicious that the inspector did not even know where to look for the hidden VIN. Where did he look?

What are the first 6 digits of the VIN on the tag in the door jamb?
