Exclamation Harmonic Balancer, Finned or No Fin?

I am helping a friend build a 1966 L79 327 for his 66 Nova. I am looking for the correct Harmonic balancer. I read where the L79 used an 8" finned balancer from the factory, part #3817173, and the GM service replacement was without fins. Is there any problem using a non finned 8" balancer since you can't tell the difference after it is installed? I see where the 68 and up 327-350 used an 8" without fins. Is the "0" timing mark and the keyway in the same position on all the 8" balancers regardless of the production year and application? He is spending quite a chunk of change building this engine compared to buying a crate engine, and we don't want it to be damaged due to having the incorrect balancer. Can anyone offer some advice?
Thanks

Timing marks didn't change location until 1968 and again in 1969. The keyway remained in the same location on the crankshaft, but the groove for the Woodruff key in the damper moved two degrees in 1968 and then ten degrees in 1969.

The finned balancer was caused not by any need for cooling or lightening, but by a change in vendors. Depends upon how extensive you want your restoration to match a white glove judged quality. Personally I prefer an SFI rated balancer with engraved timing marks.

Thanks for the quick response and good information. Exactly what I needed to know about the timing marks and needing to get a pre 68 balancer.
