Default 65 rear differential

I have a 65 rear differential. Axles are 28 spline. I purchased a limited slip differential, supposedly from a 65 nova. It is also 28 spline. The axle will not go in. ??? How do I identify that this really is from a 65 nova and why doesn't it fit? Anyone have any ideas?

Are there any numbers on the limited slip unit?

Welcome to the Team Cliff!

Are there wheel bearings on the axle?

Yes. It's a complete axle. The slip differential has numbers all the way around between the ribs. For example: 29, then just an oval stamp, then A in a stamped circle and the number 4 below it, then FAT with an 8 on the left side and an 6 on the right, then 29, the 26, then C3, and in the last rib it has 100 in an oval stamp. I can't find a reference that will tell me what these mean. I appreciate all you help.

Hmm, I agree with you, those numbers don't seem to help.

How about pictures of it, maybe that will help identify it.

Reason I asked about wheel bearing is the Spicer 10 bolt axle has 28 splines, but doesn't use a press on wheel bearing. Much earlier Chevy rear ends (prior to 1961) had 17 spline axles (coarse). Other than length, all 28 spline axles with press-on wheel bearings were the same.

Finally able to add a picture. Does this help anyone identify my problem?
Thanks.

Are there any numbers on the edge of the ring gear? Can you post photos from the side and the other end?

It almost looks non-GM in that picture.
