Default Steering Column Interchange

OK, I need help from the Nova guru's. The Hollander manual (online version) shows that the onlny steering column interchange for a 71 Nova is with another Nova or a Pontiac Ventura. Is there something about a 71 that I am missing or is the database wrong?

Not to my knowledge... I owned 7 of those 71's and the 70-74 parts were interchangeable. There might be some "under dash" wiring differences but, the steering column should be a direct bolt in. It's been a while but I am sure that someone with a 3rd gen could help out.

I have to go with Dan on this one. I put a 69 column in my 72 with no problems. I think 69-74 are interchangeable as 68 still had the key on the dash. I was told that there is differences with the trim piece under the column, but don't quote me on that, for I have had NO personal experience with it.

The 75 - 79 Nova column, the 70 - 81 Camaro column and the 69 - 72 Chevelle columns will also bolt in BUT the shaft needs changed. On a non tilt this is real easy, just slide one out and the other in. With a tilt it is a major disassembly.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't think there was a mechanical or measurement issue. Once upon a time I had a 70 big block SS 4 speed car and I knew that the column in it is the same as the column in the wifes 69 Camaro. There must be an issue with the Hollander online edition.

PHILLIP An addtional thanks for the info on the later years. That will broaden my search and make it easier to find what I am looking for.

Bingo, I found a floor shift column out of a 69 Camaro in excellent condition. It is exactly what I was looking for and it is only 15 miles from home and $65.00. I pick it up next week when the owner gets back from vacation.

Was wondering what shaft are you talking about. I found a 78 trans am with tilt and was hoping I could replace my stock column with it.

The shaft would need to come from a tilt column and involve a complete disassembley to change. On a non tilt column the shaft will just slip in and out by removing a snap ring and the turn signal switch.

The column will work if you can have some one remove the steering coupler mount plate from your stock column and weld it on to the end of the tilt column shaft in the correct position.

Man did I get lucky with the floor shift steering column that I bought. Diassembled, cleaned and painted the housing it looks perfect. I cleaned out the bearings and repacked them. The only thing that I had to replace is the key warning buzzer switch which was broken of course. I figured that it would be. It was broken in the wifes 69 Camaro and my 69 Corvette. Everthing else is good. Putting in new lock cylinder that matches all the locks on the car. One key fits all.
