Talking New 505ci Big Block Street Engine Combo

Ok guys,

I got a friend who wants to buy my 468 (whole and not just the short block) that is in my Chevelle. And so now I can go crazy on my new 505 combo. This is what I am looking at now:

- 454 block bored .100 over with torque plates, zero decked and studed mains
- Eagle rotating kit with 4.25" stroker crank and JE/SRP Forged pistons
- Compression will be about 10.6-1
- Brodix Race Rite ovals with 115cc chambers
- Crane Hyd Roller cam: 234/242 (296/304), .610/.632, Comp Pro Magnum rockers
- Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake, HPC ceramic coated
- Holley 870 Avenger carb and mechanical pump
- DUI HEI and Moroso sprial core wires
- Hedman 2" x 3" headers running into a Torque Tech 3" mandrel bent system with X-pipe

The computer simulation says 616 HP @ 6000 and 601 TQ @ 4500

The rest of the car is a TH400 w/2500 RPM converter and a 12-bolt with 3.31's.

This is gonna be a killer street engine.

OK, now yalls part, fire off your comments and tell me what you think.

Thanks

That would be a killer street - strip motor, I have a zz502 with just a cam and carb change (very similar to yours 612-636) and I ran 10's off the trailer with no tuning, so that should be a potent piece even with those 3.31's.....

That is what I am shooting for! Big motors can pull alot of gear.

Thanks!!!

I confirmed the sale of my 468 today and so the research quest continues.

This is what I am looking at now with everybody's input:

- 454 block bored .100 over with torque plates, zero decked and studed mains
- Eagle rotating kit with 4.25" stroker crank and JE/SRP Forged pistons
- Compression will be about 10.6-1
- Brodix Race Rite ovals with 115cc chambers and CNC option (342/231 cfm)
- Crane Hyd Roller cam: 244/256 (306/318), .632/.632, Comp Pro Magnum rockers
- Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake, HPC ceramic coated
- Holley 950 HP carb and mechanical pump / Also have an 870 Avenger
- DUI HEI and Moroso sprial core wires
- Hedman 2" x 3" headers running into a Torque Tech 3" mandrel bent system with X-pipe

I find myself day dreaming about big 500+ cubic inch big blocks...

Here is a link to the cam card:

http://cranecams.com/?show=browsePar...tType=camshaft

I ran the numbers on this combo through the computer and it is telling me 615 HP @ 5800 and 650 TQ @ 4000/4500. What a torque pig!

My ultimate goal is to get my car to run 6.99 in the 1/8th and still be a street driven terror! I think I'm also gonna need to invest in a Mosier 12-bolt!

In just built a 496 BB and it dyno'd at 692 HP and 613 torque. Mine ran easily into the 6.8's at 106 MPH in the 1/8 right off the trailer. I haven't really got on the motor yet. It should easily run in the 6.5's.

sounds good but why overbore it so much? if its not for racing as your cam suggests its better to keep as close to the standard bore as possable or get a 502 block.i was told this by wally booth if anyone remembers him he said the bore wouldnt stay stright and round unless you filled the block.

I was also thinking a 0.10 overbore was pretty agressive. I would be concerned with cylinder wall thickness on a factory 454 block.

Randy (just my thoughts)

Well guys here is yet another update.

I will be using another block with a .060 overbore to bring it in at 496 ci. The Eagle kit is here and ready to start building.

I have done a little more research on this combo and I am going with the CNC option on the Brodix heads and adding titanium retainers. The heads are ordered and they should be here in a week.

The power estimate is now set at 660 HP and 660 TQ!

This is gonna be cool!

Oh, by the way, 505ci is a popular combo now and many guys are running the 0.100 over bore with no problems.

I still have the block, it was given to me!

Well a very simular topic was discussed over at Steves as to IF a 396 could be bored out to the 427/454 bore size. The general opinion along with the view of the book "How to Hot-Rod Big Block Chevys" was that it is possible to do so......Soooo I suspect that boring a 454 .100" over is possible too....However I would, as was suggested with the 396 overbore, get the 454 block sonic tested just to be safe...Good luck with your project...it sounds awsome to me

FYI,

You should check out how many pistons are made for a 0.125 over bore on the 454. They are mostly high compression drag race types.

My machinist says he has built a bunch of 0.125 over 454's with no ill effects.

There are quite a few dudes on the Chevelle site running 505's.
