Default Silver ignition wire?

Hey...new to the forum...hoping someone can help with a little mystery. We are trying to restore the wiring on our '74 SS. Just dropped in a new 454 and TH400...so far so good. However, went to hook up wires from the firewall...found what appears to be the correct ignition wire (for the coil). What is odd is that all the wires are copper except this one...it's silver.

1. Why is it is silver?
2. Is this the correct wire that runs over to the coil?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Team!

The silver wire is made of a nickel-chrome alloy (same stuff as used in your toaster and in most heaters). It has a high resistance which is why the factory used it. That wire drops the voltage to the points in your car down from the full 13.8 volts or so under charge to only 8 volts. This lower voltage lets your points last longer before they pit and burn up.

If you are using a HEI ignition you want to remove the ni-chrome wire and replace it with a copper wire to provide full voltage to the HEI module and coil. The ni-chrome is only three or four feet long and comes out of the fire wall as copper wire. You should find a plastic bead where the factory spliced the two wires together.
