I am planning on building a 406SB. i have popped up pistons, stock crank, and stock heads. The part that I am debating about, is if I went with the 64cc Camel Hump 2.02 heads...will that be beneficial to the build? Is there a noticeable difference? Should is stick with the 76cc stock heads? I know it won't be pump gas friendly, but it will be mostly a weekend car.
Any information would be great. thanks So-cal Jack |

If you are wanting a real performance motor, save up for some quality aftermarket heads. 200cc Dart Iron eagles would net you significantly more power than the camel humps. Those heads were designed in the mid 60s for corvette 327s, then later found their way on 302s and 350s. I don't think that they will flow enough air in the upper rpms to really let your 400 breathe. My friend has a set of camel humps on his 406 and all he talks about is saving enough money for some aluminum AFRs or Trickflows. You could also run a 72 CC head and not have to worry so much about the compression jump from 76CC to 64 CCs.

Another opinion for running an aftermarket head versus the camel hump (saves those for the resto). You can see a 40-60 hp improvement with a good set of aftermarket heads over stock ones, and I'd go aluminum for weigh savings and heat (a good thing to check out on a 400 engine). Canfields are what I'm running on my 383, but a ton of them are out there!

Another option is save your money for a Vortec aluminum Performer RPM manifold and instead bolt on some Vortec Chevy cast iron heads. It will have the open chamber you need to run pump gas (a 406 with flat tops and a 64 cc head is running 11.0:1 static compression, with pop-ups your looking at race gas only) and will breath as well as 60% of the best aftermarket heads at half the price.
