Default heads

which is better to go with when looking for high hp a lower cc or a higher cc head with angled or straight plugs. (350 standard bore cam Duration 292/302, Lift .488/.510 @.050')

I think from reading various articles over the years that a flat piston and a well designed CC head to get to the desired compression produced the best HP results. Angled plug heads produce a marginally better burn. If you are looking for every single HP that seems to be the way to approach the issue but that is someone’s opinion I have read about, not personal building experience. Some of the builders here will probably have a more definitive answer. Jackel

i'd say a set of aluminum heads. 195cc runners, 64cc chambers, 2.05 intake, 1.600 exhausts in combination with what is considered a "Flat top" piston and then get a good intake & carb to install on top and you'll be almost there. headers/exhaust will be needed, what trans, what differential/gears etc all have a factor.

plus a zillion other things that are "Ooh-ooh, i have ta get these too"

If that is a flat tappet cam, it seems to have alot of duration for very lil lift. The heads that Johnny Rotten mentioned should work.

Yeah No Bull especially if that duration is at .050 and not seat to seat! LOL I think the numbers are mixed up a bit, no cam with .292/.302 duration @ .050 lift is going to only have .488/.510 lift. .292/.302 must be the advertised duration. And still you're right you'd think with that much duration it'd have like .540/.550 lift or so. Hmmmm. Johnny is right on with the Heads though! hey that sounds like mine!

Default Re: heads

Smokey Unich liked to use dished pistons and small chambered heads. The theory was to keep the charge centered in the cylinder for a more complete burn. Better burn of the AF mixture=more power

I built my 400 with dished pistons and 65 cc combustion chambers in the heads (AFR 195's part #1034) the static compression ratio is 10.23:1 after decking the block to get the piston .010" in the hole at TDC. With a flat top piston it would be 11:1 or higher. The stock small block has the piston down about .025" so a flat top will net you about 10:1 compression if a thin steel head gasket is used; if a composition gasket is used it lowers the compression and increases the quench area, neither are a real good thing.

I run a Lunati Voodoo 60103, Lift: .489''/.504'' Duration: 268°/276° ( Duration at 050 inch Lift, 227 int./233 exh.) RPM Range: 1800-6200. You have a large cam for a 350 engine, about the same specs as mine but the extra cubic inch of the 406 tame it down a little. The rpm range is really what you should be considering. If your cam doesn't start making power until 3k rpm will it be good for your type of driving? A street car needs more power in the lower rpm range. A power band from 3k - 9k is almost useless for a cruiser.
And just an FYI do not use angle plug heads, the power increase is minimal and the headaches they cause with headers is staggering.

I love my Dart Pro 1s
power increase over the performer RPMs was huge and I love struggling to get a plug wrench in there
