Jerry all GM vehicles with 9.5" drum brakes use the same parts as your Nova so the ones you removed had to be from the bigger vehicles with the 11" rear drums.

Philip
Makes sense that it must have been from a bigger vehicle. But drove me crazy taking brakes apart and then back together. I thought I was doing something wrong. I also double checked brakes and drums. Man talk about no fun. Thanks to all with the great info. Jerry |

I drove my car around the block. And the brakes are better, but the rear driver side still locks up. I have read other posts and do you think its the proportioning valve? Also could it be I need to bleed the brakes? After discovering the wrong parts on the drums I cant trust the work the previous owner did.

why would one rear wheel lock up and not the other ?
no, i'd disagree with it being a valve issue. my guess it's either in the adjustment or the misinstallation/application of parts.

dont know why driver side and not passenger rear. I adjusted the rear drums to zero. Do you think re bleeding will help?

the systems are separate, front & rear.
air in the rear will eventually find itself to the wheel cylinder. so if there is a teeny bit of air i can see where one wheel would brake properly and the other not BUT i believe due to air being in the system it would have a slight spongy feel to it Jerry. if the pedal is firm and it stays where it is, then i'd say there's no air. you can try rebleeding though... this is one of the great difficulties with the web, you're there and we're here. i'd say a careful inspection of left & right assemblies and careful adjustment of same and you "should" be good to go. any fluids on shoes and they'll be contaminated... that's not a good thing.
