Default 1962 Ignition Cylinder removal

I am changing.......or attempting to change the ignition cylinder on my 62 Nova. I have tried inserting a paperclip in the small hole on the cylinder while turning the key counter clockwise. No luck thus far. The cylinder I have has two small holes in it as does the replacement I got from classic industries. It's a dash mount.

Any suggestions.

you may have the paper clip in the wrong hole... inserting the clip and depressing the brass pin is what's required. sometimes the body of the switch is in the way and you have to jiggle it a little so the paperclip contacts the pin, then also you might have to pull the pin out slightly (still depressing brass pin) so the cylinder will turn counterclockwise that additional amount needed to disengage the cylinder from switch.

turn switch to accessory, insert clip, depress pin, turn counterclockwise and remove key cylinder.

My 64 does not have an accessory position only lock, off, on, and start.

You can actually run it without a key if you remove the key in the off position.

My ignition only has three stages Lock, On and Start. I have tried your technique however the little booger fails to budge. I'm sure I'm not holding my mouth right or something.

The off position was meant to be for valet parking, that way you did not have to leave the key.

What a different world we live in today than back in 64.

Gave up on it and amazingly enough autozone had an ignition switch. Installed it all and it cranked right up. Car will still crank w/o the key as it did before but now when I turn off the ignition it activates the starter and makes that noise like when you try and crank the car when it's already cranked.

do you have a mini starter installed on the car ?

it might be that you need to install a diode on the starter... Radio Shack sells them in a mini pack for under 2 bucks.

Got it. Somewhere along the way the cylinder was installed in the ignition switch incorrectly. Bought all new components and fixed the problem. Thanks for the help.
