Hello, I have a 69 Nova SS L78. It currently has a 68 Copo 427 motor with a M22 trans in it. I am not sure if this was dealer installed or a later addition. The vin has confirmed that it is a four speed big block car, but other than that, I'm not sure. The car seems like it has a history behind it. It has the original black paint with a special gold leaf type paint outlined with orange pinstripes. I don't know if that means anything to anyone or not. This car also had a Dana 60 installed early in its life. I know that wouldn't be anything original, but that's just some extra info that I am leaving. Any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Dave

Welcome to the site!

Can you post the cowl tag info? That might help... Do you have the build sheet by any chance?

Hi,
Not to cause you any grief, but:
You cannot tell if a car had a big block
and a M-22 4 speed by the vin number!!
Only paper work will do that for you.
Cowl tag will tell color/trim info!
Vin will only give you V8, 2 or 4 door.

Welcome to the Team Dave!

Sounds like you have an ex Super Stocker or other retired race car (though the NHRA never allowed Dana 60's under stock bodied cars up untill recently as they classified them as a truck rear end.)

I removed the rear seat after I purchased the car, but could not find the build sheet.

11427 tells me you have a Nova two door Sport Coupe that left the factory with a V-8 (that is as specific as the cowl tag info gets either an eigh or a six cylinder); your car was assembled at the Willow Run, Michigan assembly plant in the third weel of December 1969 (right arounf Christmas so be of good cheer). The number 203788 is just an internal order number and is assigned sequentially as the orders flow in so you know there were 103787 cars built just like yours so they probably have the assembly proceadure down by now. Your car was Tuxedo black with a black roof and had a black vinyl bench seat.

According to http://www.novaresource.org/c69.htm

69 - 1969 model year
1 - Chevrolet
14 - Nova V8
27 - 2 door sedan
WRN - Willow Run assembly plant
203788 - Sequence number (103,788th car built)

TR 731 - Trim = standard black vinyl bench seat
10 10 PNT - Paint = black upper, black lower

12C - built December 1969, 3rd week

A 3 - options...not listed on that decoder page. Other years have codes for stuff like transmission, tinted glass, radio, etc. here.

is there any other place that the build sheet may be other than under the rear seat? possibly behind the door panel? is there any other way to find info about this car?

I get this question a lot, and just wrote this response.

Hi dave you say they did not allow dana rears until recently. I personally know of a 67 Z that has a dana in it from day 1. Original owner put it in and started racing. Has won many events and was a world record holder at one point. Was there any exceptions? Actually I believe it won the 70 or 71 INDY nationals. How could this have been? just curious. Thanks in advance
