View Full Version : does this look right?
burningsquirrels Sep 23rd, 06, 03:47 PM i'm installing the chrome rails for the vinyl top on the rear quarter panel. i tried lining things up as best as i could. in the pictures i've seen on the internet, the chrome rails are parallel to the ground. is this correct? because if it is, then the back corner piece sure won't line up with the chrome trim for the rear windshield... take a look at these pics and let me know what you think...

Doesnt look right to me but then again I couldnt see the pics;) I think you need to fix your link so we can see them:)
CDJr Sep 23rd, 06, 05:25 PM They dont work for me either. A page pops up that says "The requested page with the crooked chrome trim is not available" :p
burningsquirrels Sep 23rd, 06, 05:54 PM it doesn't work for me either. the urls are right, it's my school's server. i guess that's what i get for going to a non-tech school. hell, our student email doesn't even work. they wrote their own spam blocker, but it blocks our teachers' emails. who knows, maybe the spam blocker is right in doing so. :D
burningsquirrels Sep 23rd, 06, 07:45 PM okay how about this... a pic request... does anyone have a detailed photo of the quarterpanel trim for the vinyl top? basically, the front of the trim that goes to the side window. i mocked up my trim piece and it looks like it still needs something else to complete it. does it just hang out by the window? or is there another elbow that i am missing that connects it to the rear side window?
69NovaSS Sep 23rd, 06, 08:22 PM ok I could be wrong as the pics are not as close as I would like but it looks to me that the trim for the vinyl top goes into the drip rail...

G_2 Sep 23rd, 06, 08:44 PM I don't have a digital camera but I just went out and looked at mine and it just terminates at the drip rail. There are no elbows at that end of the vinyl top either.
burningsquirrels Sep 23rd, 06, 09:48 PM it looks like i must have a different drip rail, because the way that the elbow part sits next to the back glass, the long piece just wanders aimlessly about 1" below my drip rail. i could slant it upwards, but that's not what any of the pictures look like? :(
burningsquirrels Sep 23rd, 06, 09:49 PM i just noticed in that butternut yellow picture.... it looks like the elbow doesn't line up to the bottom of the rear windshield chrome??? i hope i didn't put this huge hole in my car for nothing, lol... does anyone have a close-up picture? hey G_2, how does your elbow line up to the bottom of the rear window? i put mine flush against the bottom, so it sits in-line with the bottom trim of the window...
1slow7t Sep 23rd, 06, 10:46 PM It's dark & wet outside, but here are a few fresh pics for you. Click thumbnails.

G_2 Sep 23rd, 06, 10:55 PM Man I need to buy a freakin camera. Ok lets see if I can explain what it looks like. Back by the trunk lid the elbo that goes over the quarter panel for the vinyl top lines up with the bottom of the rear window trim. Now on the front by the drip rail this trim terminates there but what I didn't notice earlier is the bottom of the drip rail lines up with the middle of this trim piece. Let me know if this helps or not maybe I can explain it in a way you can better understand it.
burningsquirrels Sep 23rd, 06, 11:25 PM G_2, your description works well. 1slow7t, pictures are worth a thousand words, lol. it seems like i've gotten the elbow right, but the long piece just won't line up with the bottom of the drip rail unless i angle it upwards... let me go get some online picture hosting i'll brb...
okay looks like i joined the bandwagon of people without hosting :(
here we go!

burningsquirrels Sep 23rd, 06, 11:26 PM btw, the elbow doesn't fit too snug either.... it seems as if the inside corner of the elbow is sharper than it should be...

The elbo does'nt have any vinyl under it that should make a differance.
burningsquirrels Sep 23rd, 06, 11:57 PM how thick is the vinyl anyways? is it padded? or?
G_2 Sep 24th, 06, 12:01 AM I'm not sure on the thickness but when I installed mine it does have padded backing.
G_2 Sep 24th, 06, 12:07 AM I'm not sure on the thickness but it is padded. How does the quick reply work in this forum?
G_2 Sep 24th, 06, 12:23 AM Here is a question for ya. The trim piece you have is it two seperate pieces per side or one single piece per side. My 70 is one piece per side but I had a 68 some 20 years ago that was 2 pieces per side. I don't remember how that one lined up.
burningsquirrels Sep 24th, 06, 12:25 AM i have two pieces per side. what's wierd is that the long piece seems like it has to connect to another piecenext to the drip rail because of the way the back was cut open on it...?
edit: the elbow has a stud behind it that is held to the body with a nut on the other side... but the front of the long piece? does this clip in to something? like i said, it looks like it's supposed to connect to somethig, and not just hang there on its own?
G_2 Sep 24th, 06, 12:29 AM From your picture mine is definitely higher on the drip rail side.
G_2 Sep 24th, 06, 12:33 AM edit: the elbow has a stud behind it that is held to the body with a nut on the other side... but the front of the long piece? does this clip in to something? like i said, it looks like it's supposed to connect to somethig, and not just hang there on its own?
Is there any clips on the back side of long piece? Or are you talking on the end of that piece?
74nova350ss Sep 24th, 06, 01:56 AM is it possible that the moulding is from a 73-74 Nova? If my memory serves me correctly the vinyl top mouldings are different in 68-72 and 73-74 due to the difference in the quarter windows.
Eric
burningsquirrels Sep 24th, 06, 11:07 AM crap, i think eric may be right! :( $60 down the drain? maybe i can go to year one and they can pull out both items for me to compare...
the long piece has ends that match each other... and since the elbow piece slides in, well, i assumed that the other end would have something slide into it as well...
