OK.... I just bought a 79 Nova 6cyl, completly stock. Carb was rebuilt, passed CA emission control test, ran fine for 3 days. Now my the problem is, it starts great and idles great as as long as you dont accelerate. If you give it a little gas, the rpm's will shoot up to around 3100 and will not come down until you shut it off and re-start then its happens all over again. I did check the linkage and it is fine, springs work and have good resistance. When I checked the linkage as the engine was running, there is resitance, almost as if it was getting caught on something? could this be a choke problem? anyone? anything?

It is possible the fast idle cam of the choke circuit is engaging, but it should do it from start up as well. When the fast idle is occurring is the throttle against the idle adjustment screw or held away from it?

good one! I had just noticed the screw is missing and the piece inside comes out and get stuck when it reaches it's limit! I started it, held it in with a flat-tip screw driver and idled it and returns to it's normal rpm's. Is the screw part of the rebuild kit?

It will need a screw and a spring, those parts are not included in a kit. It shouldn't be t hard to find the parts, I believe the 2 bbl Rochester may use the same screw and spring.

Junk yards, friends with old cars, swap meets would be the places to look. If you can not find the parts I have some old carbs I can check when I get home from vacation.
