A 68 Nova should have the switch on the dash
It is better not to have the ignition and door locks match.
Where do you live? My son lives in Glendale and I get down there about 4 or 5 times a year.

i live in queen creek. its in the far south east valley of phoenix. vin # 113279w472438. i bought this car for $600. it had no engine or trans and was hit on the front driverside. i had to replace front bumper, core support, driver fender. i put together a nice 350 350 combo and dropped that in. i am finding lots of things miss matched on this car. like....
1. the steering coluum is for an automatic but the car had a clutch peddle assembly and a hole in the floor.
2. that may explain why i dont have a key to the ignition???
3. someone put a 70-72 ss trim piece on the back. that made for about a 2'' gap between the trim piece and tail lights. that trim piece is now on ebay as of today!
4. the car had 6 cylinder mounts in it. had to change over for the v8.
its a nice car but it needs some love. it sat for over 12 years. oh well for $600

Queen Creek is a lot closer to me then Phoenix. I bought Mary's Grand Am there in January.
The year of the column changes the procedure for changing the switch. Later models have the lock cylinder retained by a long screw, rather then a spring loaded tab.
Can you post some photos or bring the column here and I'll show you how it is done.

Well it will be at least 5 days. I have to work the fill in shift and won't get home until 8 pm every night this week.
