I was thinking of buying one of those plastic electric fans for my'71 nova coupe. the books are pretty vague besides overall dimensions. do I need a more powerful alternator? what else am I gonna need to hook this up? i was wondering if anybody has experience in this area, and would reccomend a brand. thanks . fast frank

some of the eltectric fans on the market pull some serious ampage. If you want to go to that route, I woud see what the amperage is, and if you have a early nova like from 1 gen, 2 gen and 3 gen, stock alternator, you may not have enough. 100 amp alt. are coming down in price and may be a viable answer to that problem.

A 105 Basic gm alternator should be good to Handle just about any amperage. Unless you have a competition stereo with 4 diffferent subs and all kinds of crazy amplifiers other than that you should be ok to use just a 105 amp from gm.

I personally recommend against going the electric fan route unless you are forced into it at gun point (say somebody threatens to turn your motor sideways and move the rear axel up so that it is now a wrong wheel drive). FWD have to have an electric fan. Your car doesn't.

Electric fans are up there with wearing your pants down around your knees and your hat sideways. It is a cosmetic fad that says you follow the herd, and are willing to waste money for something that isn't as good as the mechanical fan you have now. Please note that the editors of most car mags are in their thirties and all of the staff writers of those articles espousing the virtues of the product their sponsors are trying to sell are just out of high school.

Of course that is just my opinion. Others may have a different view point.

I was actally considering an electric fan. The more I look into it though the more I want to just keep my mechinical fan and get a new shroud. They Sound as about as promising as an Electric water pump.

Dang Dave don't hold back let us know how you really feel :D

I have one...well that is two in the El Camino, they have good and bad points. The Nova will get a clutch fan set up, which BTW isn't much cheaper then the electric.
