Hey guys. I am a little new to these cars but looking at buying one and i would like to know what you guys think that know a lot more than me about them.

I am looking at a 1971 Chevy Nova SS Yenko. I was told it is not a Yenko and I have my doubts that it is a true SS. There is no SS emblem on the grill but there is one on the back of the car. It has an automatic transmission in it with a B&M Shifter in it that was converted over from a manual. I know it had a manual in it because it still has the clutch pannel in it. It does have a 350 in it with a little obvious work. It has Headers, a holley carberator and an aluminum intake. I haven't heard it run yet though. The odometer reads 18,792 miles. The dash has no factory gauges but a clock, speedometer and a fuel gauge. The interior is a costum interior with bucket seats and a back seat that is in good shape. The door pannels, carpet, and headliner are all in good shape. The body has a little minor spot rust on it. I haven't been underneith it yet.

There is one problem that I am not sure about. I haven't talked to the ownter about it yet. But the vin tag on the car doesn't match the registration vin number.
Vin # on firewall: 1147WRN016779
Vin # on Registration: 114271W116807
I don't have any numbers off the block. I don't even know where to find that.

Thanks for your help. Zach

Welcome to Team Nova :D

here's a website you might find useful to help identify the Nova: http://www.novaresource.org/

and here's a quote that'll tell you about identifying the SS option of the car. unfortunately without original paperwork there's no way to confirm it's an SS let alone a Yenko.

1968 thru 1971 = optional package: there is no way to verify an SS these years without some original paperwork. In-dash tachs, floor consoles/shifters, console gauges, bucket seats and even 12-bolt rears are NOT indications of a real SS. There were real Super Sport Novas built with the standard dash, column shifters, bench seats and 10-bolt rears. However, you can guess at it's originality. First, all 1968 Super Sports have finned front drum brakes (standard Novas have non-finned drums), and all 1969-71 Super Sports have power front disc brakes. The next thing to check is the engine code. If the engine is original (the last 6 digits of the VIN are stamped on the engine block) and it has a application code (also stamped on the block) that decodes to an SS only engine, then you have a real SS. Without the original engine or some original paperwork, you're basically out of luck.

also, i'd be VERY leary of a car where the VINs don't match up :(

I've yet to see where a car can have a different vin on the firewall and a different vin on the registration and both be pertaining to the same car.

The VIn on the dash in the corner of the drivers side (can be seen through the windshield) needs to match the VIN on the title. The tag on the firewall is a trim tag and they do not have to match, it is not used for vehicle ID, but it lists codes of the paint and interior options installed in the car.

it looks like the VIN number you quote on the fire wall is the number on the cowl tag. That is not the number used on the registation. Look for the one on the top of the dash like Big Dave said. THAT is the actually VIN number for the car.

Wow thanks guys! Thats the number i was looking at i think. The number i am talking about is under the hood on the fire wall to the drivers side of the master cylinder.

Guys this is great! I just ran the number that i have on the registration which you guys say is the real vin number and it is looking better and better every post reply i get on here. This is an awesome thing. Thanks a lot guys!

Where is the numbers stamped on the block? Is it in an area where i can see from opening the hood or getting under the car?

there is a pad on the passenger side of the block. It should be located behind the altenator.

Hi,
Vin looks like your car was a v-8 but that's all it says.
Not a yenko by a mile!!! Last year for any Yenko was 1970!!! Biggest v-8 in '71 was the 350 270hp.

Yeah i pretty much knew it wasn't a Yenko. It has Yenko decals on it that i will probably take off if i buy the car. I have yet to talk to the owner of the car, but when i do i am going to find out if it is a true SS. Hopefully it is!

Thanks Guys.
