I found a local guy selling a 1970 SS and the info he told me about the car was " Runs, has 350 motor with 400 turbo trans. The Nova needs to be tuned up to dial it in...Has new motor and new 650cfm Edelbrock carb with Elec. choke. New Bumpers, Grille,Door Handles Rear Tail Light Assy's"
I'll post some pictures of it in an album
What is a reasonable offer?

Anyone have any idea if something around $4500 sounds fair for this? I posted pictures in an album. When I go out to look at the car before buying, what exactly should I check for? I know to bring a magnet to check the body for bondo. Is there anyway I would be able to tell for sure that this is an SS and they didn't just slap the badges on it?
Thanks

the lack of a true SS hood my be a dead give away. Ask him what happened to it. If he said it had alot of rot in it and got rid of it, better check the whole car for exessive rot. Also then question that it may not be a true SS.

Only way to tell a true SS for 70 is by a matching numbers motor, which would decode to a 350 ci 300 hp motor (check this website for codes... http://www.novaresource.org/) or paperwork. Not a title saying SS on it either, need a build sheet, original sale receipt or protecto plate.
Also if it is a true BB, it will be an SS.
Crawl all under the car to check for any rust issues.

Ok Thanks, I think I'll first check with paperwork and then if the last six digits of the vin match the engine number (if it isn't the original engine and no paperwork there is no way of telling correct, I mean it should have power rotor brakes but that is no definite way of telling) Even if this wasn't an SS does 4500 sound fair if there isn't much rust or rot?

If the body is in as good shape as the picture are tellin, then yes. Pictures may say a 1000 words, but they can also lie alot, so it is hard for us to look at them and make an accurate depiction of what your actually trying to buy. Can you drive the car? how old are the pictures?

pictures won't necessarily show what's under the carpet (floor rust) nor under the trunk mat (trunk rust)
some things are better off seen/evaluated in person ;)

it appears there's no rear window trim. that indicates to me there's rust there.
i'd look at it in person
