View Full Version : Leaks like a sieve...

My radiator has developed some leaks over the years. Guess it has something to do with the door sill someone used as a radiator mount

It is riveted to the core support, and there are probably no bushings under there to isolate it from the engine/road vibrations.

I'm going to remove the radiator and take it to a local repairman that does good work. If he can save it, then good! If not, then I guess I'm in the market for a new radiator.

So, since I will be re-installing a radiator, I want to update the bushings and core support hardware.

Before I buy something that I don't need, I was going to check with everybody to make sure that I am on the right track.

First, I am going to need some radiator support bushings...

And I will need one of these (I have one already, actually)

And lastly, some of these (these seem incredibly expensive, anybody know of some cheap but good ones?)

My core support is fine, but I want to install all of the bushings that I can to protect the radiator for a long time to come. So do the bolts and bushings pictured above go here?

They connect the core support to the frame at the bottom in two places, right? Can I just back those old ones out and pop the new ones in without taking the core completely off?

Additionally, what size bolts are required to attach the radiator bracket to the top of the core support? 3 are required.

Core support bushings come in the frame bushing kit (there are six total; two for the core support and a big and a small per side for the sub-frame to body. You have to reuse the washers and the steel sleeves.)

I don't think you need a chrome radiator mount, and as far as that goes I believe all SB radiator supports are the same across models and years (though don't quote me on that).

The radiator mount I have is from a donor car, and it's painted black. I just used that picture because it's the first one I found.:o

So you think that I might as well wait until I get the whole "Energy Suspension" bushing kit to worry about the core support bushings? I guess the mount bushings will isolate it enough.

Yes the radiator is fully supported by the bottom and top support brackets (all of the weight is on the bottom, and the top support keeps the radiator out of the fan). The core support is part of the sub-frame mounting system where the fenders provide diagonal support for the front end.

Good deal. One last question then. Do you know the specs on the three bolts that attach the radiator mount to the core support?

They are pointed (self piloting) 5/16-18 x 3/4 from memory.

Correct on the bolts.

You can buy the factory rubber isolators for the radiator at any GM dealership a lot cheaper then those Summit parts. Rubber absorbs the vibration better too.

All right. Radiator insulators are the correct name for the bushings.

GM parts # 371189
Price per unit - $6.02

Called the local GM dealership, and they had 4 in stock!!!

I've heard the Summit insulators have to be trimmed to fit, but these should drop right in :D

Now where's that thread about parts still available...
