View Full Version : Idles high
HotRod74 Dec 1st, 08, 04:08 PM I brought my nova to school today and a couple of my buddies wanted to hear it so i give it a couple of revs and the car starts to idle high im guessing about 1400. Its been a while since ive driven the car and it was fine all this morning and when i went to get lunch. Im guessing the linkage but nothing seems to be binding and its stumbling (dieseling) when i turn it off. Manifold gasket leaking a possibility? What do yall think?
Cador Dec 1st, 08, 05:05 PM First off, what carb are you using?
SHIFTY4 Dec 1st, 08, 05:07 PM if it was idling nice before but now it's not... i'd check for deteriorated vacuum hose etc...
give everything a l:eek::eek:k-see
HotRod74 Dec 1st, 08, 05:09 PM Its a holley 2 barrel. I couldnt find any numbers on it :( can somebody tell me where they are?
HotRod74 Dec 1st, 08, 08:19 PM I checked the hoses and they look good. I took the air cleaner off theres some junk on the choke valve. I looked at the linkage the cables arent binding but i can pull back on it a little to slow the engine down a little is that normal? Sorry if its a lame question but its my first carburated car :p
David_H Dec 1st, 08, 08:27 PM I would check and make sure its not stuck on the high idle cam.
I tried to find a picture of the fast idle cam but couldn't find anything good I hope someone can come up with it?
TrueSS72 Dec 1st, 08, 08:42 PM Is it an electric or manual choke?
HotRod74 Dec 1st, 08, 09:03 PM Ive read up on the fast idle cam and theres people that have had the same problem im having high steady idle.
Heres a bad picture of my engine bay i dont know if some of you can tell what model carb it is by that. Im gonna take a look see at the carb again to look for that fast idle cam

TrueSS72 Dec 1st, 08, 09:18 PM Looks like it's manual choke, could you have accidentily pulled it? You said when you pulled on the lever, it slows down. Sounds like the chokes valve is down.
HotRod74 Dec 1st, 08, 09:23 PM AHA! David you and Chris were right on the money it was stuck! I moved it and the choke opened up. Fixed her up good any suggestions what i can put on it so it doesnt stick? I need to find a book on carbs at school (uti) they dont teach that anymore haha
Thanks!
hotrodnova Dec 1st, 08, 10:08 PM why a 2bbl?
TrueSS72 Dec 1st, 08, 10:17 PM Glad you got it fixed! :disco: You can wire it open, that's what I done, but these guys probably have a better way
HotRod74 Dec 1st, 08, 10:45 PM thats how it was when i bought it havent had the money plus its a 305 its just in there to get it around til i can get the 355 im building for it.
PDQ 71 Dec 2nd, 08, 12:08 AM I've never seen a two barrel with a fuel transfer tube from the front bowl to the back bowl. Looks like a 600 CFM 4 barrel Holley to me from the picture with single feed but primary and secondary fuel bowls. I can't see the back one with the breather on, but I assume the transfer tube goes to a rear bowl which 2 barrels don't have. At least not to my knowledge. Looks like it had automatic choke from the vacuum diaphram on the front that someone switched over to a manual setup. Make sure you've got a reasonably stiff throttle return spring as these old Holleys get worn the throttle shafts sometimes get a little worn and may bind a bit and springs get a little weaker and they don't always return to full off position at idle. But as the guys said got to take care of the choke problem first. Hope all this helps.
Cador Dec 2nd, 08, 09:06 AM Wow. That DOES look like a 4 BBL Holley. And here I was, all ready to tell him to check his idle stop solenoid... :(
Glad you got 'er going!
