Does it have a stock cam and intake/carb?

Sounds like two different problems. First, like Dave said, we can't diagnose your issues without a little more info about your engine.

1. After Market Add-ons: Is everything stock, or is has there been modification of the engine?

2. If so, what?

3. Have you ever had the car in Drive without issues?

4. If not, are you sure about the tuning of the carb?

5. Are you on a points or HEI ignition system?

6. How old is the battery?

7. Are the battery cables clean and in good condition?

I know, alot of questions, right? When you go to the doctor, can you just tell him that your knee hurts? :D

We would just hate to give you a wrong answer because we don't have the whole story.

I would say if it runs fine in park with no load on it and when you drop it in gear and the engine dies, it could be an ignition problem .It could either be a bad vacuum advance or the timing is retarded. If your battery keeps going dead you either have a bad battery or the alternator is not charging it.These are just ideas we really need more info on the car.
