i've been hearing this loud clunking sound in my 76 nova.... i can feel it through the floor and it sounds like its coming from the front.. It seems to happen while im turning or when im pressing the brakes but its mainly when i turn... it doesn't happen all the time but has been more often recently... what are some reasons why i would hear a CLUNK!
Thanx again......

Bad U-joints are the first thing that comes to my mind.

I would suspect wheel bearings, ball joints or tie rod ends. Caliper could be loose as well. What ever the issue is, it wont get better. Have the front suspension parts looked at.

brakes or suspension... jack it up and inspect it ;)

sounds like wheel bearings or Brakes. If you have drum brakes all around you may have a broken spring in one of the front brakes or if disc brakes you may have a loose caliper as Brian suggested, or possibly worn front end parts such as ball joints or pitman or idler arms, or tie rods. Definately need to inspect brakes, hubs and steering for defects. U joints can be deceiving but they usually sound/feel like from under the car not up front.

Another thing that comes to mind is possibly a broken shock or take a look at the A frame bushings.

i will check the calipers out...and i wanna say my mistake, its actually mainly when im pressing the brakes and its possible that when im turning im also pressing the brakes so maybe it doesn't really have anything to do with the turning..... but i will be back once i check out some things but till then Thanx a lot for all the suggestions guys

I have seen this with a shock bushings! BUSHING THAT IS GONE! ( Me!)

Also a wrench or something in that nice open space between the truck and quarter panel!:( Why they did that?

Revival post:

I'm having a very similar issue in my 63. I can feel the clunking right under my feet on the driver side. I thought possibly a tranny mount figuring it only happened when coming to a stop. Or a motor mount as the motor is reving down?

Wouldn't the wheel bearings squell first?
