View Full Version : headers for '62 nova
nikwho Nov 1st, 08, 01:45 PM So, i was assuming that i would use block hugger headers for my small block that i am putting into my 62'. I was told that they will not work because of the crossmember. is this true? do i need to run fender well headers? modification of the strut towers?? what "style" of headers work best and what else, if anything, needs to be addressed/ thanks guys
SHIFTY4 Nov 1st, 08, 02:48 PM it's correct, Block Huggers will NOT fit due to the crossmember. i have a set and confirmed it, i was a non believer and tried... it's a no go.
standard chassis headers, or fenderwell headers can be used... there is a block hugger (sort of) header that will work... made by "Sanderson" but they are made specifically for the '62-'65 ChevyII (maybe '66-'67 too)
try looking up the application at whatever header brand you'd like to use, check footnotes for your application. automatic. manual, column shift, floor shift, angle plug heads, straight plug heads etc etc etc... make sure you check the full application WITH footnotes to ensure you get a proper header for your car.
i have numerous links saved at www.JollyRodder.com that might be useful to you...
hope i helped,
JR

onovakind67 Nov 1st, 08, 03:14 PM I've had good luck with the J&W Nova headers and also the Hedman 68160 headers.
67 church Nov 1st, 08, 10:13 PM I am a fan of the Hooker Super Comp headers 1-3/4 tube size.
nikwho Nov 2nd, 08, 06:17 PM I am looking at and wanting to order the Hedman Elite 68168 headers. they say that they are for 64-72 Nova. I am assuming that they say that because a small block was not available in the nova until 64. Is this correct and will they fit my 62???? thanks a bunch guys. being only one number off of what you suggested, onovakind67, im assuming they are a nearly identical part. maybe different finish or something. I am wanting to order these headers today but wanting to make sure im not making a mistake.
onovakind67 Nov 2nd, 08, 06:47 PM They'll fit a 62.
nikwho Nov 2nd, 08, 06:52 PM awsome. thanks a bunch...

draginutz Sep 18th, 09, 02:40 PM Will the hedman 68168 fit a TCI Clip?
draginutz Sep 19th, 09, 10:14 AM No one?
draginutz Sep 22nd, 09, 07:28 PM This is what Hedman says about the 68168 hedder for a 1st gen with TCI/Heidts clip
Hello there, Pete
Thank you, for your interest in our Hedman Street series hedders for your small-block Chevy Nova
According to your brief description we can only recommend that you will need a special custom built hedder and oil pan for this type of conversion. You should consult with TCI for the recommended hedder type used with this type of front clip.
All of our Street series hedders are designed specifically for the vehicles intended listing in our catalog with factory original engine mounts and frame brackets in the original factory location.
SORRY, but cannot confirm that this hedder part# 68168 will be compatible with your custom Mustang II front clip.
SORRY, but we currently do NOT offer a special oil pan for this custom conversion.
According to our past experiences you will need a special custom built hedder and oil pan for this application.
All we can offer is a set of our hedder flanges and hedder weld up tube kits to build your own custom set of hedders.
Let us know if you are interested in building your own set of custom hedders using our flanges and weld up tube kits.
Good Luck,
Hedman Performance Group
Customer Service
Anyone know for sure if these hedders will work with a TCI clip? Anybody? Hello?
SHIFTY4 Sep 23rd, 09, 11:37 AM it's the steering shaft to the rack that presents the issue. it's going to pass right through one of the header tubes i'd imagine.
Sanderson and S&S headers offers a header that works with the after market clips. the issue that needs to be addressed is the type of transmission. if it's a manual transmission whether mechanical linkage is used or if it's hydraulic. if it's mechanical linkage with the manual transmission the only header company i found was Sanderson. part number C32 or C32AP (AP for angle plugs)
draginutz Sep 23rd, 09, 02:55 PM Thank you thats a better answer than I have gotten any where else
draginutz Sep 23rd, 09, 02:56 PM Thanks shifty. Which S&S's will work? I am assuming its the p/n 5205
SHIFTY4 Sep 23rd, 09, 03:14 PM because i have brain fade please remind me... does your car have an automatic or a manual transmission ?
draginutz Sep 23rd, 09, 03:22 PM auto on the floor but might be manual with Hydro clutch in the future
SHIFTY4 Sep 23rd, 09, 03:30 PM yeah that's what they list for a '62-'67 with R&P 1-3/4 tubes, straight or angle plug heads.
there are no other foot notes posted so i'd recommend that you call prior to purchase and just confirm the headers will fit your application. better safe than sorry, right ?

draginutz Sep 24th, 09, 08:49 AM Now to pick between Rewarder and S&S. HMMM?
draginutz Sep 25th, 09, 07:42 PM Ok well after looking at the Rewarder Header website I noticed that their nova headers are, as far as I can tell, the same as their 55-57 chevy headers. So I started looking around and found these.

Now I am hoping that I can get them in Hedmans thermal coating as I am not too into the shiny cermaic coating. If I can, get them with the thermal coating, then I am going to try them and if not I guess I am pulling the trigger on rewarders. :D
prorod Sep 26th, 09, 05:36 AM Never used Hedman so can not report on them. I can give you example on S&S. 10 or 11 years ago when building 48 Anglia with 70 LT1 350 had HARD time findng headers to fit. Called Hooker and Hedman to see if maybe with their computer they could help solve header problem......nope. Friend had S&S on his street rod so called them, giving them measurements over the phone they said they had a similar set up and would make these slight corrections. Got headers, had them coated locally and 10-11 years later still great headers, great sound, NO leaks ever and still look almost new! E-mailed them today on info for 64 Nova with 350, have not heard from them yet. Got Hooker headers yesterday from Summit for 67 Camaro, have not open box yet so no info on them. I can say that i am still very happy with the S&S headers, the workmanship, and the customer contact. Good luck with your Nova.
draginutz Sep 26th, 09, 12:39 PM Thank you for the input...I will keep them in mind as well.
