View Full Version : '62 Hardtop 'Budget G-Machine'
slow4dr Sep 16th, 08, 01:55 PM I know most of you have seen these pics on the other sites. For those that haven't I hope you enjoy.
The primary goal of the car was to build something capable of producing C6 Z06 performance numbers at the cost of around $15K. There was never really any plans to make the car look good, have nice interior, or have any creature comforts like A/C or a heater so the budget goal should be easier to attain. I will be doing most the work myself and I will be using as many used parts as possible.
Here is a basic tally as of Summer of last year. I haven't made much headway since then so the dollar amount is pretty close.

Here is how the car looked around 4 years ago before the project began.

I yanked off the front end and sold it as is.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e260/slow4dr/SUNP00033-1.jpg
I bought a C4 front clip and molded it to custom rails. This was later changed again since wheel offsets became an issue. I ended up narrowing the crossmember 3" so I could run off the shelf C5 Vette wheels to save money.

I bought some Competition Engineering(CE) replacement frame rails and laid them inside the stock ones.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e260/slow4dr/101_0011.jpg
I also picked up some CE subframe connectors. I actually flipped them upside down and side to side. This made them fit inside the rails and in the pocket nice and tight.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e260/slow4dr/101_0018.jpg
CE also got my money for axle brackets and crossmember.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e260/slow4dr/100_0483.jpg
The bars were purchased from a local steel yard and a friend of mine at Banks Power welded the ends for me. Notice there are 3-bars

Doing some basic mock up before welding it in place.

First design of the watts link, was later changed for longer bars.

The cage going in place, also a Competition Engineering item

slow4dr Sep 16th, 08, 01:58 PM Wheels = Ace Slick 18X9.5 front & 18X11 rear.....I have been thinking about selling these to get the new C6 offset for the rear which will allow me to run a 315 tire

The firewall had to be cut to clear the oil pan on the now raised C4 crossmember. The engine ended up about 6"-8" farther back.

Good shot of the setback and fiberglass front end.

Here's another CE product, front anti-sway bar. I am actually contemplating change here as well since I'd feel better about a splined shaft than just a bolt.

*finished up downbars
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e260/slow4dr/101_0851.jpg
I picked up a TCI universal tranny crossmember and hacked it all up to make it fit. Looking back now I probably could have done this project ALOT easier using some of their existing Nova parts. :o You can actually see the factory crossmember hanging another 2-3" below the new one. Ground clearance will be nice with the new one. :D

Final ride height has been set

I made a new coil bracket for more room
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e260/slow4dr/103_1111.jpg
Mocking up the radiator and intake, radiator was bought from Super Shops in Berdoo, random aluminum piping was from Banks' scrap bin

Picked up some PIAA 7" lights at the local off-road swap meet for $10. I'm still contemplating some 5" fog lights grafted in to the lower part of the front end.

SHIFTY4 Sep 16th, 08, 02:19 PM Excellent !!! i'll be following the progress on this one
Big Dave Sep 16th, 08, 02:30 PM I would point out that the Corvette C5 aft section (just like the front) with the ZF trans-axel (or Borg Warner's copy of it) will also drop out and bolt into the back of any car instead of going with a Watts link live axel. That way you know you are going to get Corvette performance because the only part of the Corvette you are not using is the body.

I'd like to do something like John's on the next project but on this budget it just wasn't feasible. I had found a few complete rollers for less than $10K but by the time I lengthened the torque tube/drive shaft and narrowed the rear/axles I'd be over budget. It would be nice to find a body wide enough and short enough that would drop right on top with minimal mods for the next project.

You know my e-mail addy, I require pictures immediately
BTW: He's going to the BBQ. ;)
Novanutcase Sep 18th, 08, 06:14 PM Hahaha! No pictures but I can say that they are taking a bunch of leftover vette parts and building a chassis for a 1st gen nova. Rodgers gonna flare the fenders so that he can run with the stock vette track width. Pure track car! Should be VERY interesting!!
What time you going to the BBQ?
John

Very interesting indeed! :beers: I can't wait to see how the fenders turn out.
I need to talk to my dad since I'll probably roll with him in the wagon. More than likely around 1:00-2:00.

I'd never ditch you guys, after all my pops still has his wagon.
I don't have my hopes up to high that the car will actually sell given the current economy and it's current condition.
40buickcoupe Dec 4th, 08, 02:51 PM If you dont complete the car or sell it I have a set of G Man coil overs front and rear double adjustable for sale. I built the car and put 200 miles on it and decided to go to air ride. I could save you or who ever decides to finish the car a few bucks. IM me if intrested there pretty much brand new.
Nice ride would love to see it complete
slow4dr Dec 5th, 08, 01:47 PM I got two calls yesterday about the car, one guy is close so he's coming to look at it tonight.
SHIFTY4 Dec 5th, 08, 02:04 PM L   K my rear... tell 'im ta cough up the Ol'Greenbacks
good luck to ya ;)
Smooth 72 Dec 27th, 08, 08:34 PM Cool project and nice ride ...But damn that front end is wayyyyyyyyyy out of place on that car that spoiler has to go and those openings in the front just dont work at all sorry !

The openings ended up looking like the Dodge crosshairs, it's a love it or hate it thing. It was more function over form since I couldn't cut slits in the original grill area and keep any strength in it.
Novanutcase Dec 29th, 08, 09:55 PM I think it looks badass! DON'TSELL IT!!!
Keep it for the little one! Yeah, that's what it is! For the little one! LOL!

I guess after you mentioned it, it does look kind of Dodgeish but my first impression was third gen Camaro. Great work I'd love to have seen you finish it.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
