View Full Version : Steering column very loose.
Scott1964 Sep 10th, 08, 01:18 PM The other day I was driving my 64 HT and the horn went off and wouldn't shut off. I had to unplug them at the horn. My steering wheel became very loose up and down and in a certian position I could silence the horn.
I'll have the wheel pulled off today. Just wondering what I should look for as in what would be causing the short. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott
SHIFTY4 Sep 10th, 08, 01:42 PM there's a ball bearing that's held in place under tension by a spring that slips over the steering shaft... maybe the spring is missing or broken which allowed the bearing to become loose...
here's a pic from the assembly manual showing it... hope i helped

Scott1964 Sep 10th, 08, 02:21 PM Thanks Shifty. When I put the aftermarket Grant steering wheel on several months ago, I don't think I put that spring back in. Hopefully I did't ruin the bearings. I'll check it out tonight and let you know. Thanks again, Scott
SHIFTY4 Sep 10th, 08, 02:25 PM that's a common error, no biggie. you can probably just re-install the spring and everything will be OK... hopefully nothing was damaged. most cases the bearing will just slide up in the mast jacket and that's where the looseness comes in... if you operated it too long it is possible the looseness damaged the turn signal switch... you look at it when you tear it down and see ;)
good luck to ya  ;)
Scott1964 Sep 16th, 08, 07:39 AM Shifty, it worked. When I installed the new Grant wheel I didn't replace the spring. The bearings looked good. I packed them with a little more grease and stuck it back together. I was convinved I needed a completely new column. You saved me a lot of cash.:hurray:
If you don't mind sending me a PM with your name and address I have something that I found in my 64 HT when I bought it that I'd like to send you for helping me. Thanks again, Scott
Big Dave Sep 16th, 08, 11:38 AM Don't do it Johnny, he's going to send you the stale old air out of his spare tire, because he knows how rotten you are, and wants to make you more so.
