View Full Version : estimated 1/4 mile time for 400hp Chevy II?
nikwho Aug 28th, 08, 02:26 PM So, im well aware that this question is totally dependent upon the way that all of my car is setup. rear end gearing, tuning, etc, etc, etc. But I have decided upon an engine finally and im going to buy a year one crate engine. im going to purchase the 400/440 350ci small block. Im buying a built th 350 tranny that im hoping i can keep together. so, the biggest factor im guessing is the rear end gearing. Im not sure what gear ratio to run but can I get some guestimates from you guys about what the 1/4 mile time might be in my little 400horse 62' Chevy II. Im chomping at the bit if you can't tell! thanks for your input.
brian oneil Aug 28th, 08, 03:37 PM What are your intention with the car, daily driver, street/strip, drag race only. What is the max rpm of the cam, carb selection, converter choice.....etc. Tire size and compound would need some consideration as well. Too many variables here to give you and exact answer.
SHIFTY4 Aug 28th, 08, 03:59 PM you might try this link for estimating et... just input all the variables ;)

Big Dave Aug 28th, 08, 06:07 PM Well there are about forty factors to consider, but I would say at least twice the grins per mile, than you are used to.

OldNovaNut Aug 28th, 08, 06:12 PM I can tell you for sure, with my350/350 in a 62 2dr. Sedan, i do two things. Stomp it and hang on for dear life. Man, what a handfull. Sooner or later the stock rearend will let go. Thats the weak link on these "pocket rockets"
nikwho Aug 29th, 08, 02:19 AM well thats what im looking for, getting six ways of stupid! haha I have hopes of having a ten second car. Im not going to ask for much more than that. I am building the car up as a weekend warrior. certainly never a daily driver. i have no problems running premium gas. I was fully aware that my question was very vague and I really appreciate nobody being rude like people act on many forums. I have really grown to like this place and find my self checking it out many times per day. Im really getting ansy and i know that its far too soon for that as i JUST started what im sure will be at least a two to four year build. I guess that i need to find a buddy with a fast car that i can ride in when i get the bug.
Vertexrex Sep 3rd, 08, 05:13 PM Just for grins, here is my combo. I have a street driven 63 Nova with an all-iron GMPP crate 454HO that's been in the car for a little over 5000 miles now (425HP). TH350 with a 12-bolt Eaton posi and 3.08 gears and it runs great on the freeways and 11.80s at the track in the heat.
Big Dave Sep 4th, 08, 10:58 AM Drag racing is actually pretty easy reduce the weight to a minimum, and increase torque to the maximum and hang on. My personal hero was AA/FA pilot "Wild Willy" Borsch in the "Winged Express".

PDQ 71 Sep 5th, 08, 01:58 AM Well according to the callculators that Mr. Rotten put up there it showed about mid elevens at 11.50 I bounced that off of Desktop Dragstrip based on an engine model I have with @400/412ish and a 3500 stall converter in a 3400 lb car with 26" tires 10" mild slicks and comes up just under 12's at 11.90's with 3:73 gears and aggressive driving style. Pretty close to what Rich is saying with a Torquey BBC at 425HP. Switched it up to 4:11 gears and only gained like 5 hundredths, not worth the swap in my book, at least for that combo, keep 3:73 for the street. But hey, even if it runs 12's that's still a very fast car!!! A 12 second car is no SLOUCH! :noway:
