The wiper motor on my car is apparently a replacement. There is a harness plugged into it, but there's also one hanging lose with no place to plug it in.
My wipers are non-functional at the moment. No blown fuse, the switch is working, and there is fire to the harness, but it's no go after that. The motor appears to have a fluid pump built into it.
What does this tell you, and is there anything for me to do but replace the entire wiper motor?

Probably a more modern intermittent pulse style wiper motor. It could require a sensor to tell it where the wipers are (a little magnetic reed switch that closes when the wiper is at the base of the wind shield).

My 71 has the same wiper motor. The connector in the pic that is not connected should attach at a 90 degree angle from the connector that is attached, the spades should be located right next to the upper left (passenger side) wiper mounting bolt, mine also has a third (single wire connector) that attaches just below the 2 wire connector that faces the passengers side.

Agreed. That looks like a stock one. So you can probably chalk up my earlier response as a mistake.

The mistake was all mine. I guess since someone has been messing with the thing somewhat recently, the grime was rubbed off. Hence the reason I said it was a replacement.
I didn't see anymore spades for the harness to attach to. I removed the cover over the fluid pump, but still saw nothing. And the individual wire that you spoke of is MIA. I'll look again when the light is good.

Well, I found the spades and plugged the harness in, but I can't seem to find the single wire. And the wipers work now, but only at one speed. Guess I'll look at some more wiring diagrams and see what I can see...

If the wipers work only at on speed it probably is the switch on the dash that is the culprit. It should be a common item at any auto parts store.Or if they don't have one you could get it at Year One or The Paddock.
