View Full Version : 77 Nova Smog Requirements???
slayer677 Jul 23rd, 08, 02:18 PM Bought this 77 nova not to long ago came with a rebuilt 350 with a turbo350 tranny in it, but its not smog legal. Went to local smog shop to see if they could tell me what i need, got a list but i dont know where to get stock parts for it, anyone got ideas????
1quik69 Jul 23rd, 08, 02:54 PM I'd hit the wrecking yards first. The aftermarket companies carry a lot of that stuff also.(Year One, Classic etc). I would definitely hit the wrecking yards first because buying it new will cost you big bucks. Check with your local parts stores and shop and compare prices before you buy.
Philip Jul 24th, 08, 10:04 AM Where are you located? CA has a rolling exemption and AZ has a classic car exemption. What was on the list? An A.I.R. pump and cat should be all it had.
slayer677 Jul 24th, 08, 05:28 PM Well list was Exhuast manifold (stock ver) no headers. EGR, Cat, Air pump, and they described some kind of pipes that went onto the exhaust manifold that goes to air pump i believe. and because of this i have had to change my exhaust setup my intake manifold and my carb, are they allowed to do this? Grrr its 2 years from being exempt
SHIFTY4 Jul 24th, 08, 05:34 PM A.I.R. tubes = Air Injection Reactor tubes
slayer677 Jul 24th, 08, 05:42 PM Oh...ok i see...where might i find them? also found my list they also require a smog pump i guess >< CA pain in the butt
SHIFTY4 Jul 24th, 08, 05:43 PM my first stop would be the yellow pages and call all the local bone yards.
ANY smog pump found needs to be free wheeling, say, Non-Frozen/seized or the core will be unacceptable at a part house. if you find one that's free wheeling i'd run it as-is as i imagine it'd be a temp thing and after passing smog you'd tear it all off again and revert back to what you were running ;)
swapping crap every other year always prevented me from owning a "Smogger"
good luck ;)
Big Dave Jul 24th, 08, 05:46 PM There are CARB exempt headers you can use. I would try a set of third generation Camaro headers as they are the block hugger style and have all of the tubes for the air pump.

If you are careful in the instalation the speed shop you buy them from should take them back if they do not fit properly.

slayer677 Jul 24th, 08, 05:47 PM Alright thanks, I'll call them when i get back home.
slayer677 Jul 24th, 08, 06:51 PM Does the third generation camaro headers have the pipes already welded onto the headers?
SHIFTY4 Jul 24th, 08, 07:06 PM i don't know if any of these will work... from "Classic Industries" catalog... maybe they can be modified.

you might try checking all the restoration suppliers. i have quite a few listed at www.JollyRodder.com
Philip Jul 24th, 08, 09:19 PM You may be able to buy headers that will accept the factory tubes that John posted. If not Hedman makes a set like Dave posted that are weld in. http://www.jegs.com/i/Hedman/500/22830/10002/-1
Performer manifolds are available with EGR valve ports. High flow cats are available and do not hamper performance like the ones used in 77. What state do you live in?
slayer677 Jul 24th, 08, 11:26 PM Live in CA, smog requirements here...well i dont like it lol
Big Dave Jul 24th, 08, 11:40 PM Does the third generation camaro headers have the pipes already welded onto the headers?
The picture I posted are of Headman 1-3/4" third generation headers that I have installed on my wifes old police car (I swapped out the old HO305 out for a 406 I built for a slight increase in power).

slayer677 Jul 25th, 08, 04:12 PM So really the exahust manifold isn't required its just the A.I.R pipes are? Like i could just weld the A.I.R pipes on to my existing headers and it will pass smog? cause if so i could save alot of money lol. Also picked up new intake manifold and my EGR valve, got smog pump and bracket from wrecking yard, was looking where to mount it on my 350 engine and it doesn't look like thiers a spot for it or im blind >.>
Philip Jul 25th, 08, 06:07 PM The AIR pump is usually mounted on the passenger side under the alternator. It bolts to the 2 mount holes on the lower front of the block and I believe the adjuster attaches to one of the alternator mount bolts.
Doesn't CA have a 25 year exemption or did they change it?
If you can not figure out the bracket post a photo of the parts and we can try and help.
Philip Jul 26th, 08, 04:44 PM Well I finally found the DMV site, and CA should make it easier to find. So I guess the rolling exemption must have ended and only 75 and older models are now exempt. That stinks. AZ enacted a law that vehicles over 25 years old with historic plates and classic car insurance policies were exempt from testing. The reason being most were low mileage per year vehicles and kept in good running order. Hagerty insurance did all the paper work for me and sent me notification that I would no longer need to be tested. This type of law should be lobbied for and passed in all states. The hobby and industry that supports it contributes billions to the economy of most states and it is only logical that governments would want to help promote the cash flow not hinder it.
ALIENX Jul 26th, 08, 08:24 PM the cal legislators have proposed a bill that would repeal the 75 and older exemption and go back to if your car had smog it will need it again.this would apply to the san joaquin valley. i don't know if thats the entire valley from sac to fresno or just the central valley from lodi to merced. ther are many organiztions that are fighting against this so hopefully it will get shot down if it hasn't already.arnie is even against this.also in cal you must now pass a vapor test (no idea what that is my sunbird passed) to go with the sniffer and visual test.
Philip Jul 27th, 08, 12:25 AM The vapor test is probably the evaporation from the fuel system that is caught by the charcoal canister and eventually purged into the engine. If the legislation keeps tightening I do not see how the cars after the 75 model year will be able to stay on the road.

(In my very best Warner Oland impression doing "Carlie Chan") Ah so, berry tlue!
Would seem that the legislature has ulterior motives to eliminate cars they do not want. They can not legally forbid you owning the car, but they sure can leagally keep you from every driving it in their state. As the laws are written to apply to all cars witout singling you out.
My offer to come live in Sunny Florida still holds. We have no smog inspection what so ever. You can put any motor in any year car you want. Only one that can get you for violation of smog laws is the FBI; but I think they have bigger fish to fry than a hot rodder.

slayer677 Jul 29th, 08, 12:41 AM Well finally got the smog pump mounted waiting on a new pulley to hook it up but everything else is about done. Also got the A.I.R pipes...not direct fit the 2 center pipes are to close together i ended up cutting it apart and welding a inside tube to extend it a little bit, Worked very well actually better than trying a bunch of sizes to get it just right.
CA use to have a 25 year exempt, but it changed not sure how recent it did but it did >.> I do hope they change it back to where the year keeps rolling over so eventually it will be exempt.
Oh and also anyone know of Aftermarket A/C kit?? to hot down here not to have A/C :)
Philip Jul 29th, 08, 08:27 PM Steven there are no direct fit A/C units yet for the last Novas. The best you can do is install a universal unit from one of the suppiers of classic cars and street rods.
slayer677 Jul 29th, 08, 09:27 PM Alright thanks, I'll look into that. Also ran into a new problem with the exahust, since im using exahust manifolds they want me to use a "Y" pipe to convert it to single exhaust, so i went hunting today :) but the ones i found, the mounts for them is only 2 bolts and my manifolds are 3 bolts, anyone know where i can buy these brackets seprate?
Philip Jul 30th, 08, 12:51 AM I think I may have a Y pipe in the back of the shop. I'll check tomorrow and see what it has on it.
I do not think I could put up with that many regulations. The conversion to single exhaust just seems to be idiotic IMO. As long as it passes the emisson test it shouldn't matter if all the equipment is there. It is what comes out of the tail pipes that should be important.
The engine in my El Camino is a TPI from an 89 IROC, it burns way cleaner then the 307 it replaced, but under CA law I would have to install equipment to make it pollute more, politics at its best.
slayer677 Jul 30th, 08, 01:40 AM Cool thanks.
Yea well im not the one that paid for the car im just the one doing most of the work to it so i can drive it ^_^ And I've been annoyed with these stupid smog laws ever since i found out this car wasn't Exempt! :(
Yea they would have you do that which is stupid...you would think they would let you keep the engine since it burns cleaner... That was my idea actually is to take a newer engine with the smog equipment on it but CA smog laws are dumb. Would think they wouldn't complain if it burned cleaner O.o
Found this not sure if it would work though, Input?? http://www.mooreparts.com/store/product/1322/AC750736/
Philip Jul 30th, 08, 11:44 PM I do have a Y pipe with 3 hole flanges. I have used it with iron manifolds to break in engines that will have ceramic headers.
The flange in the link will work if the center hole and bolt spacing are correct.
slayer677 Jul 31st, 08, 12:09 AM So i take it you still need it and dont want to sell it? :)
Philip Jul 31st, 08, 12:29 AM I do not need it any longer. My Nova will be broke in with painted headers. You can have it just pay the shipping. Let me take a photo of it so you can see what it looks like before you decide if you want it.
