View Full Version : Fuel tank door
denfly Jul 19th, 08, 12:50 AM I'm having my 67 Nova painted soon. I was thinking about relocating the fuel tank door to behind the license plate. Can I use the parts from a 67-69 camero or a 68 Nova to get this done? I believe those are the years that came with the rear fuel door. If so how hard will it be?:D
Novanutcase Jul 19th, 08, 02:20 AM If you do that you will need to relocate the fill tube on your stock tank or have a custom tank made with the fill tube wherever you want it. Also, if you want to try and locate it behind the license plate you'll have to lower the tank considerably so that the gas flows down to the tank. It won't be easy. You may want to just fill in the opening on the dirvers side quarter and fill it from the trunk.

denfly Jul 19th, 08, 05:21 AM If the tank sits to high I'm dropping that idea. I wouldn't mind replacing the tank, but lowering it would be an issue . Moving the fuel spout to the trunk is an interesting idea. Would it be easy or is the body shop guy going to tell me it's difficult and costly? If you could break it down for me I can act like I know what I'm talking about when I go in there. Would be appreciated.
By the way John nice car I'd like to see a posting of it when it's painted.
SHIFTY4 Jul 19th, 08, 09:39 AM i don't know if this would be of assistance to ya... this is what David H is doing with his fuel fill on his '67 Coupe...
these shots show where Dave welded tabs to attach a "hide plate" and relocation of the fuel fill tube. the factory fuel fill tube was used on this job in addition to some 18 ga steel...

here's a early shot of the plate. i don't have one in it's later stages. the plate on the fuel inlet will bolt to the plate on the back side and attached with acorn nuts. it'll all be removable for access etc... there will be another plate on the passenger side in addition to one behind the seat divider area to clean up the trunk area.

Dave's '67 project isn't yet complete as Dave and i took some time off his project so we could complete mine. we've already completed the tank fill and had it all mocked up, it'll look pretty nice when painted etc. i hope this helps in some small way.
Novanutcase Jul 19th, 08, 02:59 PM BOY! You desert rats are getting inventive aren't ya! LOL!
That looks pretty trick! I like how you guys made the hidden plate for it but my only issue would be when you pull the nozzle out of the fill tube and it drips all over your nice new upholstery you're gonna be upset! If you're going to fill it from the trunk I thought it would be pretty neat to use a tank with a top center fill tube that you could hide underneath the trunk floor with a little trap door that you could open to get access to it. I would also build a drip pan around the fill tube mouth so that if anything drips it falls into the drip pan and not on the trunk upholstery.

SHIFTY4 Jul 19th, 08, 03:30 PM yeah, the dripping was thought about John and it's one of those things he'll be remembering. ;)
the pics don't show the vent tube either...
the tank will still utilize it, it'll exit by the fill tube below the floor ;)
Novanutcase Jul 19th, 08, 03:37 PM TRICKY!!!!
Very Nice!

denfly Jul 19th, 08, 11:09 PM I like the set up. I can be careful and avoid dripping for the easier set up. I appreciate the pictures.
SHIFTY4 Jul 19th, 08, 11:13 PM once ya get in there and relate the pictures to your trunk you'll see where and what is being done... start out with some poster board/cardboard for a template and go from there... i think you'll spend more time on the templates than the work itself.
and remember, cardboard is cheap so waste all ya want 'til ya get exactly what ya want ;)

Ya think Dave will be OK with letting you add it to the JR library?
John
SHIFTY4 Jul 20th, 08, 12:04 AM John there's a few items we've done to Dave's car that i want to add to the JRodder site... but he has 99% of the pictures. once we get done i'll be collecting them and making albums to do just that ;)

Mark,
I like that! It really flows with the shape of the wagon! Looks almost stock! You know how I am about mods looking stock!
