Hey, Nova Guru's
Does anyone know what would be involved in adapting a 605 power steering box in a Gen 1 Nova?

thanks , Jerry

this was a popular conversion on '55-'57's back in the '80's and it was quite a bit of work.

it's the pitman shaft and the housing that holds it to the frame where the issues come in... on the '55-'57's they used the lower portion of the '55-'57 stock box and the top portion of the 605 unit. they used a seal with silicone in between the two to prevent leakage... it was major surgery back then.

now this was 20 or so years ago, i'm probably outdated by newer products etc so i don't know if anything i wrote is even valid anymore...

i do still have the magazine write up on it in case you'd be interested in reviewing it... i could scan it and post it for ya if it'd help ya...

anywho, just tryin' ta help ;)

the benefit of that gear box on the Tri-5's were that it's an intregal power steering box which would allow the trashing of the old style ram and control valve style of units... say ChevyII ??? (yup, same system as a Tri-5)

in all honesty i think if the work was to be done, again, a lot of work... i think i'd look at a rack & pinion conversion before the 605 box.

if you check www.JollyRodder.com you'll see an excellent write up by Bill Ellis on his "Chevette Rack Conversion" i see nowadays that a gent "67Church" from "Church Boys Racing" has the same thing but with maybe more whiz-bang parts. you could look at Bill's install if you'd like to junk yard it or you could look at Church Boy's Racing if you'd just like to buy it and go... CPP (Classic Performance Products) also makes new lower tubular A-Arms that would be a great addition to either Bill's conversion or Church's (both same conversion, same parts)

hope i helped.

I've got the CPP lowers on my car...what a great improvement, I'll take a look at those two offerings.
