I have a 63 and 64 Chevy II 4 door (ya ya ya), and I am sacrificing one for the other. Sitting side by side, the two cars look vastly different. My concern is whether or not the doors will work on both bodies?... I decoded the vin #'s and apparently they are both 400s. The '64, I'm certain it's a 400. The '63, not so convinced. Can someone please help me out here?

Thanx!

the doors (other than trim, door panel style) are the same ;)

good luck on the project and welcome to Team Nova :D

Thanx! That was really a concern. It is just strange to me that the two cars look worlds different. Can't wait to start rebuilding! Been a Nova lover for years. My first was a '63 2 door post that my dad had crushed cuz I was being a bad girl.

if you're comparing same doors, LF to LF etc then they're the same (4 dr to 4 dr), i think what might be making them look different, as stated, is the different style of trim (or lack of) on the doors... the door panels might have a slightly different design but they're interchangable too.

i'm thinkin' if yer Ol'Man crushed yer car... you musta been REAL Bad... shame on ya  ;) :D DON'T be bad... be Rotten :D at least it won't get ya crushed ;)

Johnny (been Rotten his whole life) been maimed a few times, never crushed ;)

I've gotta couple pix I'll put up in the next day or so. I'm a little supersticious (can't spell it) about taking pix of my cars cuz it seems they die shortly afterwards. But for the sake of before and afters I had to cross all my fingers and toes and snap some pictures. Yikes. It'll be a slllloooow project. I'm insisting I do all or as much of the work as I am able with supervision of someone with some know how. I do have another question though. While decoding the VINS, I found myself a little puzzled with my '63. Here's the VIN and the question afterwards: 30449O168037. The VIN is stating the car is a 400 series, but there are no body decals suggesting this anywhere. Infact they all just say Nova II. While my '64 clearly has decals stating it is a 400 series. I'm sure there is a possibility that somewhere in time they could have been changed out? It's not a spring chicken afterall. Or is it possible that '63 only used the Nova II body decals?
Thanks again for the welcome! I'll be here a lot during the course of my rebuild with 100 questions!

to decode your VIN & Cowl tags, you can go to www.JollyRodder.com and on the left side towards the top is a link for "NovaResource"

at that link, on the left upper side, you'll see a grey area, move your cursor/mouse over it and click on "Vin/Cowl" info... it'll explain everything you need to know about decoding your car(s)

there's quite a few other links of interest saved there, maybe some will be of future help to ya ;)

And yes, I love my 4 doors! There's no shame there people! How about some decent sites for parts?! If I still had my '63 post, I'd be in parts heaven. My theory on the 4 door.. looks great, serves a purpose (I have a family) and you'll only get to see the back end of the baby anyways - eat dust!

there's no real way of knowing "exactly" how the car came from the factory without the original documentation... i've owned quite a few classic cars in my day and have seen some pretty strange combinations.

the ChevyII logo and bar/shield... is there a "400" insignia inside the bar/shield ???

here's the links for the VIN on the '63 & '64, looks like you know what you have already so i don't know if i'm helping or not...

here's the Cowl tag info for ya: http://www.novaresource.org/cowltags.htm

you're totally helping. I'm just trying to suss out the little details. Thanx for the links as well. That is where all my trivial questions rooted. I guess I'm not gonna sweat the small stuff. But yes, on the '64 there is a 400 series in the shield. There isn't one on the '63, and I was just curious if in '63 they didn't use the 400 series shield. I know, its all trivial. But if '63 did use the 400 sheilds, (and for whatever reason mine is lacking one due to it being changed out by some previous owner) its a bit of chrome I'd like to save for the trim.

Gloria, i'm not an expert in the field (i can pull weeds though :D)

the differences will be in the trim, grille, upholstery styles etc... the cars are basically exactly the same, all parts are interchangable (fenders, seats, doors, all that stuff)... it IS the trim changes that were different... now the exact differences between the '63 "400" trim and the '64 "400" trim i'm really not experienced enough ta tell ya the differences, although i know they were different.

you have the VIN & Cowl tag info there in front of ya, i see the one you posted shows exactly what you say the car is, so that's not really the issue... as far as mixing the '63 trim and the '64 trim, i dunno about that, they're different so mixing isn't going to work... now exchanging all from one to the other will work but then you'll have "this" trim on "that" car if ya get my meaning... if one or two pieces of "this" trim are bad, i'd suggest trying to locate the exact pieces you need and keep it all the same. every now and again some good deals are found on E-Slay... if you like you can also place a Classified ad in the "Wanted" section here at Team Nova and maybe someone will have that one elusive part yer needing and can hook ya up.

another thought if i may... i agree saving all the trim... as your project procedes and the car is brought to a higher and higher level of build you'll probably find all that original trim isn't really up to snuff any more BUT in the meantime it might look just fine. so by saving it it can be possible sold at a later date to recoup the cash possibly spent on new reproduction pieces later on... the items you have as stated can be sold to someone with a "driver" quality car that'd help them detail out their project... if ya get my meaning ;)

the side trim etc is doing nothing but going up in value so i don't recommend just offing it. it's not reproduced and there's people out there who can straighten & repair it and polish it up to a nice shiney luster.

me, now all the trim on my cars has been trashed... i'm not into that stuff, all the trim holes in my ride were filled  but you'll find IF you wish to get rid of it, there's a demand for it ;) so if/when yer done parting out the one for the repairs on the other, there's money to be had for the stuff you don't really need ;)
