View Full Version : Stock Wheels for a 72
zdav28 Apr 30th, 08, 02:50 AM Hi All,
Hope some one can help me here. I've searched but I can't seem to find an answer, or if what I'm looking for is even available in OER. I'm helping my 15yr old son put together his 72 Nova. So far the the only thing I've had to invest is my time and gas. He's been looking at wheels, of course shiny new after market, but I've finally convinced him to stay with the stock wheels that came on the car. The problem is I can't figure out what type of wheel they are or where to get the chrome trim that goes on them. They're not Rally or SS wheels, they are 14", with a beauty ring, they have chrome or stainless steel trim that insert into the 5 slots, and the center piece, (derby hat on a rally wheel), isn't round and only covers the lug nuts. Like a five pointed star. Does any one have any idea what these wheels are called, or where to get them? We have the wheels and a couple of beauty rings, but I've run into a dead end. Thanks for any info.

zdav28 Apr 30th, 08, 03:22 AM Johnny,
Thanks for the info, at least now I know what they're called.
29 SERIES NOVA STYLE RALLYE. Yes they carry them, but not the trim or the center caps.

SHIFTY4 Apr 30th, 08, 03:30 AM OK, then that's at least a step in the right direction... they've been identified (at least what they call them, right ???) you might try a couple things... right click/save an image of the wheel at their site and post an ad in the classifieds here for the rings & caps, also, i see you're in the So-Cal area... on May 10th at the "Fairplex" in Pomona will be the antique car swap meet... you might like to check it out in case someone there has a set for sale. here's a link for the swap meet (in case you've never been there) http://www.pomonaswapmeet.com/
sorry i couldn't be of more help to ya... good luck though ;)

zdav28 Apr 30th, 08, 03:55 AM Been to the Custom Car And Hot Rod Swap Meet many times BC, (before children). I didn't know there was one coming up. I'll have to mark the date, and take my scooter, if I remember correctly there's a lot of ground to cover. Thanks again.
SHIFTY4 Apr 30th, 08, 04:09 AM just because i have nuthin' else ta do tonight... would these be the items ya want ??? at least the rings...
"Classic Industries" http://www.classicindustries.com/
i don't know what the caps look like so i don't know what i'm looking for...
zdav28 Apr 30th, 08, 03:28 PM Yes, Yes, Yes, those are exactly what I was looking for. I don't know how old the catalog is that you pulled that from, but a current online search from classic industries list the price as 23.95 each, 6 required per wheel, times 4 wheels $575. Funny we were just at classic this weekend, have the latest Nova Catalog, but these aren't in it, just checked again to make sure. Plus I still haven't found the center cap. I think we're going to be seriously looking at a Rally Wheel Package. It's amazing how prices have gone so crazy.
Thanks again.
If I run into you at pomona I'll buy you a cool swig :beers:
Dave
SHIFTY4 Apr 30th, 08, 04:00 PM Hey Dave, yeah i was amazed at the prices too... they must be REAL proud of those puppies, huh ???
that catalog is dated 2007.
maybe your son was right about the wheel swap... for that kinda cash JUST for the rings... wheew, i'd hate ta price the CAPS !!!
if i go to Pomona i'll have a "Team Nova" tee-shirt on... and i'd take ya up on the refreshment... but it'd have ta be a RootBeer though ;)
Philip Apr 30th, 08, 09:03 PM These are common wheels, used from 71 into the early 80's. When they were painted argent silver the chrome inserts were not used. When painted body color the inserts were installed. Sometime around 80 -81 the center caps switched from cast pot metal to plastic. They were made in both 14x6 and 14x7.

zdav28 May 1st, 08, 04:06 AM Root Beer is the best kind of beer. I'll keep an eye out. I'll have a J&M Speed Center tshirt on, if its cool A peace scuba pull over.
Hey Philip, thanks also. Maybe cruzing Pick A Part might turn up something, Highly unlikely the center caps would be sitting in the trunk of some grandma's cars that just had her License revolked for racing or too many tickets.
4 - 15x8 rallys are on order from classic industries 675. rims, rings and derbys.
Thanks for your help
Big Dave May 1st, 08, 09:00 PM Check hubcap shops on line as they are fairly common. They appeared on all GM cars (Olds Buick, Pontiac and the chrome inserts were more common on the high priced spreads like Buick or Olds). The hubcaps are marked with the Chevy BowTie so that you will have to find at swap meets and salvage yards (usually being used as an ash tray on the counter).

onecarnut May 6th, 08, 07:56 AM I believe those small circle inserts are still available from GM. I usually see them in the junk yards for about a $1.00 each.
The bigger problem is the center cap. Finding a good used one is practically impossible. Hubcap Annie has a repro one, but its not as good looking as the original.
I had this wheel combo on my 1985 ElCamino.
jerryt May 17th, 08, 08:17 PM try veterans swap meet second sunday of the moth. I always see rally rims rings and caps for sale. I think one is on June 6. I am partial to rally wheels I have 15 x 7 with 255 60 15 rear, and 225 60 15 front. The swap meet is in Long beach a lot smaller then Pomona. Easier on legs and kids.
