View Full Version : Which Spray gun of these would you pick!
raydium@verizon.net Apr 25th, 08, 07:49 PM Agonizing over which choose to pick. I am a newbie painter working with my first down to metal 1970 Nova.
I want to fist get a gun to apply SPI Epoxy primer and then High build, Tip sizes spec for the primer is 1.5, then as my skill level increases get a better gun for BC/CC.
I am looking at 3 brands from www.spraygunworld.com (http://www.spraygunworld.com) .
Astro, Sharpe Finix and DeVilbiss FinishLine
http://www.spraygunworld.com/products/Astro/index.htm
http://www.spraygunworld.com/products/Sharpe/FinexIndex.html
http://www.spraygunworld.com/products/DeVilbiss/index.htm
All are inexpensive guns but have a good reputation.
I cannot seem to pick one OR decide on HVLP versus LVLP
I have an 18 CFM Ingersoll Rand 5 HP 135psi 80 gallon compressor.
I will be spraying in a small garage with a self build plastic tent/booth.
With no prior knowledge I just cannot seem to make a decision on a gun or gun combo. Can anyone lend advice or pro's or con's on what I should get for my scenario and skill level. My wife has given me the go to get one and now I'm stalled. I need to strike while the iron is hot.
Thanks
Ray
1bad66ss Apr 26th, 08, 09:02 AM Hey Ray check this site out http://www.autobodystore.com/home.shtml ,they have a ton of review on spray guns. A lot of the guys there are professional painters, and can offer great advice for choosing a gun that will meet your needs.

jbon64 Apr 26th, 08, 01:30 PM i just bought a sharpe/finex hvlp 1.8 tip to shoot primer . it lays it out nice and glassy. i havent decided yet if i want a sharpe to do my BC/CC .
rubadub Apr 26th, 08, 01:40 PM I use a Binks #7 the air nozzle is 36SD
The fluid nozzle is 36 (medium)
I sprayed z-chrome rust defender right out of the can with no thinning, sanded it, and sprayed ppg dp90LF / dp402LF over that with no thinning with the same nozzle, and I'm not very good at painting, but this is just the way it ended up.
You can make the epoxy shine just a little more if you go after it pretty good with a california duster, but not a lot more.
SPI costs less and might look better yet, anyway, thats how I did it.
My garage was about 76 degrees when I sprayed it.
36

Howard, I have found out, if you tell somebody that something works, its a good idea to have some proof.
I know I like to see pictures of what different people have done, its extra work, but, if your going to talk the talk, you better be able to walk the walk.
Did I get that right.:D

INXS2 Apr 27th, 08, 07:19 PM I like the Devilbiss FLG 3 for primer and the Devilbiss Plus for SS, BC/CC. The Plus lays it out smooth and is inexpensive. Used a Binks model 7 and it worked great in it's day but the new tech HVLP/LVLP types save on paint (doesn't put a lot of paint in the air). The Devilbiss FLG 3 take more air then the Plus, but it still works well for the price.

No doubt the binks will use up more paint (in the air). But its pretty handy with the cup on the bottom for getting inside frame rails and tight areas.
I use a hvlp for every thing else, but I sure like the way it lays the dp epoxy on.

jp71ss May 13th, 08, 11:25 PM I bought the Astro gun, 2.0 tip for primer and I have yet to get this thing to lay primer good and flat. I cant figure out what Im doing wrong. It would look better if I had rolled it on. LOL!!
CDJr May 15th, 08, 03:20 AM 2.0 is way too big to be laying epoxy primer with. Im guessing thats your main problem. I use an Astro LVLP with a 1.4 tip for epoxy, but I used to spray it with my Sharpe HVLP with a 1.3 (before I discovered LVLPs) and never had a problem.
jp71ss May 19th, 08, 11:23 PM It wasn't epoxy primer. It was 2k urethane primer.
