View Full Version : Quarter Panel Rust
depressingsteve Apr 20th, 08, 05:07 PM I am working on a 1970 nova, and I have some rust on the quarter panel of the passenger side ( well on both sides but I'll deal with the other side later) my question is should I replace the whole thing with a new panel or get some sheet metal (18 gage?) and just replace those sections? I am not trying to make a "Perfect Show car" but I do want it to look acceptable.

SS 396 Apr 20th, 08, 05:35 PM Looking at the picture I think a Full 1/4 may be best.If you patch the panel,be sure to check for lurking rust inside.Where the panel is rusted thru makes me think you will find more. Also look for previous Repairs.I understand you are not looking for a Show Car,but I hope you would want the repair to last.
depressingsteve Apr 21st, 08, 02:30 PM Yes the longevity of the car is a primary concern. I don't plan on reselling, at least not in the short run. I have seen a ton a of places that sell the 1/4 panels is their any thing I should look for? Or lookout for, for that matter? Thanks a bunch, your advise is always appreciated!
SS 396 Apr 21st, 08, 02:51 PM The Goodmark 1\4 Panels work well.Contact Nightshade on this site, good prices and service. Before you order, check the outer wheelhouse. If it has rust, replace it while you have the 1\4 removed. Also check the trunk drop off.
SHIFTY4 Apr 21st, 08, 02:51 PM i think that rust is like an iceberg... you only see a small portion that's above the waterline... (what shows through the paint) if you think the worst and find it's NOT then you'll be relieved. if you think it's nothing and find out different it could get depressing (pun on yer user name ;))
i'd wager there's a lot more there that you can't see... i agree with SS396 Joe and think it needs to be checked out thoroughly to be repaired correctly...
NIGHTSHADE Apr 22nd, 08, 02:33 PM I guess we can say that repairing it with duct tape didn't work very well for the last guy. I had a friend once who used silver foil tape for rust repair and it held up for a few days. But then again, I've heard somewhere that there is nothing better then factory metal.:noway:
I'm here if you need me.
depressingsteve Apr 22nd, 08, 04:36 PM Thanks a bunch guys, Yeah Laughed my ass off when I saw the duct tape. Hey on the 1/4 panel replacements they don't look like they go up very far, am I still going to have to use some sheet metal for the gaps?
SS 396 Apr 22nd, 08, 05:02 PM If you get the Full Goodmark 1/4 Panels that Nightshade sells, they will go to the Factory Seams. The factory seam is at the line that you see at the roof.
David_H Apr 22nd, 08, 10:06 PM Just put the duct tape back on and paint it:noway:
I will bet it is going to get real ugly when you pull that quarter off:yes:
Good luck:thumbsup:
pjohnson Apr 22nd, 08, 10:44 PM When you remove it anything you dont replace, I would recommend OSPHO for the small stuff.
Also Nightshade will hook you up
NIGHTSHADE Apr 22nd, 08, 11:09 PM Here is what you'd be looking at getting.
