Whats up die hard chevy fans. Have a question for anyone. Seem's I am having a problem getting rid of a rocker arm or lifter tap. replaced lifters with hydraulic, and put in new push rods. using synthetic motor oil. primmed system for @ 10 minutes. fire up car and slight tap. run up to temp and sounds like I am 2-3 qts low. adjusted valves after new lifter instal. you can get a snug turn on the push rods after valves adjusted. running a stock 305. any info would be greately appreciated.

could it be possible a lobe was wiped out ??? even though a new set of lifters were installed it's possible a cam lobe is gone which would accelerate the wear process on the new lifter(s)
i don't know if it'd be easy to check for you, but by rotating the engine you can check/measure each individual valve/rocker for lift variation. also, synthetic oil isn't the greatest for engine break-in.
i'm hoping i helped in some small way, i wish ya luck and welcome you to Team Nova ;)

Welcome to the site Pat. What was the reason for the lifter change and what did the old ones look like?

engine was rebuilt about 25 years ago by gm. i bought it last year. long story short put on all my new parts from 305 i smoked into new 305. same deal lifter rattled like a diesel. talked to a few buddies they said most likely lifters.

will give it a try cam has probably 30-50 miles on it. pulled it from the 305 i smoked. actually lost a lifter on it. found this engine cheap so went with it.
thanks appreciate the info.

do you have a micrometer ??? if so the cam lobes can be mic'd... one side of the lobe should read about .001 different than other side which helps lifter rotate... lifters will have a convex, not flat or concave bottom to them... if lobe is flat or flattening, it should be swapped for a new unit (along with lifters)
you probably know this stuff already so please excuse me, not trying to state anything disrespectfull....

Several years back I had a lifter tap in an old 396. Had the valves adjusted and no matter what I did there was a tapping like loose rocker arms. I finally figured out the problem. Valve guides where wore so bad that compression was blowing back up by the valve stems. Sounded just like rocker arms loose. Hope that is not your problem . Just kicking around ideas. Hope you get it cured. Robert
