Hello all, I have made some headway on the body portion of my project but I have run into a problem with the engine.

FACTS:

1968 SS NOVA
350cid small block chevy
electric choke edlebrock carb
TH350 Transmition

PROBLEM:

In nuetral the engine runs great, i can wind it out with no problems and it starts up and sounds great. When I shift into drive or reverse on flat ground I can idle around slowly. As soon as I apply the accelerator the engine dies. I am at the beginiing stages of the trouble shoot and just looking for some direction.

Thanks in advance,

Sounds great as in a lumpy cam? Stalling with a back fire; or a stumble then it falls over dead? It could be a lot of things. If you put a big lumppy cam in the motor you will need a higher stall torque converter (that is why they call it stall; if you do not have a loose enough converter the engine stalls when you put it in gear).

It could be carburetation, lack of vacuum advance on the timing a lot of issues are possible.

I am thankfull for the help, I would say stumbles and falls over dead. As for the stall converter, it doesn't stumble and die when I put it in gear its only when i press the accelerator pedle while in gear. I can idle around in gear fine. After reading about my carberator, i may have the vacum advance pluged into the wrong port on the carb (timed VA vs Full VA) I will perform that test when I get home tonite.

Thanks again,

A bad vacuum advance or an advance that is not hooked up properly will make your engine fall on it's face every time you drop the throttle .If the advance checks out o.k. next check the accelerator pump on the carb.
