Hey everyone,
I just bought a 71 nova and i was trying to figure out exactly what i got.
The VIN is 114271W177605. I know it was originally a V8 car. Does this mean that it was either an SS or a Rally Nova? I looked it up on multiple websites and found that the VIN actually did not tell you if it was an SS or not from the years 68-71. What are the other ways i can tell exactly what i have. I'm trying to restore it and I want to do it right. So please HELP!!!!!!!!

Unless when you are taking the car apart to restore it you come upon a copy of the build sheet, or the car came with original documentation; there is no way of knowing. Build sheets were stuffed inside doors, under seats, above the gas tank and in other strange places while the car was being built (it was thrash that was left in the car by the orignal worker who built the car so it isn't out in the open for the foreman or car buyer to see).

The build sheet lists everything that was bolted onto or into the vehicle, and was basically a set of instructions to the worker on what to add to the car. Because every person on the line who added something to the car had a copy, there is always a chance of finding a copy that might have been left behind durring the build.
