I have decided on tires for the rear of my 72- M/T 28-10.5-15 Sportsmans or L6015 Indy's, I have 30/915 Phoenix slicks's on 9" Weld ProStars under there now on a narrowed 9". The 30's are a bit tight, so 28" to 29"' should be ok. BUT another thing has come up. The M/T tires are Bias ply's and I have 165R15 radials on 15x4" ProStars up front (Which I will change to M/T front runners when I am rich again), So how bad will the beast handle w radials up front and bias out back? I know this is not recommended. Bucks are low so changing out all four tires at one time is not an option + I do like the donut look of the current radial drag tires. If its going to be bad I'll buy a smaller Radial rear tire (BFG 275/60R15), I'd really like a wider tire out back than a 275/60 tho. With the Rear End and wheel setup I have the room ,I could probably go with a 12.5 wide tire

Oh , I should mention that this car will be primarily a street car w only one or two strip (4-8 runs) use a year.

I've run mine for years with radials up front and bias on the back. It's not a g-machine, but it's fine for driving around.

Just use common sense and you'll be fine. I never could get use to the rear squirming around with the bias ply.

The only time it will make you pucker is in the rain or ice and snow. The combination of the two types is not recommended, just be careful.

Dgas,

I would rethink the radial/ bias mix...I once wrapped a 65 GTO around a parked volkswagen with that combination...of course it was raining and I was 16, but still...very spooky handling under less than ideal conditions. If you can do it, do a full set of radials, or try mixing the Mickey Thompson Competitors with your favorite drag slick...that should get you much more predictable handling without breaking the bank. Let us know how it works out. The Competitors are a biasbelted tire with a phenominal amount of grip but run at the typically higher slip angles that bias tires do...should be an acceptable match to the drag tires in the back.

Cheers!

PS - I once had a 74 Nova that I had set up for autocross....so I understand what you are working with...

Givin that any tire over 6" in tread width is squerrely on wet or frozen pavement and what I will be running is 10-12" wide I expect a bit of a Loose feeling in back in those situations w any bias ply tire. I grew up and learned to drive in the bias ply era's.(Goodyear wide ovals SUCKED in snow or heavy rain) It will be a temporary situation until I can get a set of bias ply's up front. (read that as saving up the $$$) I was bit more concerned w a sidewall blow out possibility from short term use. I'll start looking at radials for the back. But the size + look I want is hard to find.

28-29" Tall X 9.5 -12.5" Tread width (11.5 -13.5" section width) X 15 wheel in a block or flat shaped tread, not the rounder more common radial donut shape. I am trying to duplicate the "slicks" look and size my car that now has 30/9/15 slicks.
