thinking about it ,more of an loosely translated tribute car,I am starting w the wrong year and i think he ran all four speeds and I have to run a auto. But its the LOOK I want. I have to research it first , but in any case it would be a local only car.

Grumps 68 actually was originally a L79 4spd car.Grump put the 396 in it. Actually a Blue Bucket seat interior car.68 Novas have a one year only dash, keys on dash not on colunm....

Any idea why Jenkins went this route in repalacing the 327 with an L-78? Too me, it seems that when this was done there must have been at least 50 of the BB Novas factory built to run the SS/D as NHRA requirements? These L-79 Novas were rare cars with only about 1200 being built. The same thing happened to one of these on The Dick Harrell team, but ran AHRA instead, which allowed for dealer installed cars that went through authorized Chevrolet dealers?

Ray,Grumps car was a early built 68,have a copy of the invoice.Built before the factory 68 Nova SS 396 cars were built.Notice no SS hood either. Grump also told me to my face at GM of Carlisle when he was signing autographs.I thru a picture of My 68 Nova SS 396 4spd in front of him to sign.I said heres a car just like yours, same colors and original 68 Nova SS 396/375 4spd from Reedmans Chevrolet in Langhorne PA.I told him it was a very rare car just like his,he says ,mine was rarer, mine was a original 68 L79 Nova! It was kinda of funny when I thru the picture in front of him,him and his daughter were really surprise though!! Dan

How amazing you got him to lift his head!! I asked him questions and he never moved his head!! My 67 Nova SS has his L-79 66 Nova Leaf springs in it. From way back in 71 or 72. He was a signing machine that day!!
Wish I could get his auotgraph on my dash someday.

Dan,

Thought there must have been some reason to explain why he didn't just have a factory L-78, instead of going to all the trouble to convert from a 327. Thanks for the information.

Dave,

Interesting you speak of the 66 L-79 and the parts you have on your car. As I was sat here making this post, an interesting thing happened. Since I had the Barrett-Jackson auction going, in drove Bill Jenkins with a recreation of his former race car. Believe it sold for $57,000?

I heard about the car!!! Wish I had the rest of the car.
I went two years ago the auction...was great to see the cars.

My car was in a guys shop in 72 or so..{too long ago to remember} getting the motor done over by a guy who was good friends with the Grump. He pulled up in a van or truck with these X code leaf springs in the back and said that he don't need them anymore and asked if He wanted them!! {My friend owned the car then} Yes!!!!!! They have been on the car ever since.

Dave #3,

I have not seen this question asked, but do you know if there was more than 1 66 Nova Bill raced? Since you live in the area and have some interesting history about parts from his car, thought you could possibly know. I do have a picture of a red nova, that looks to be a different car from the one pictured, with a banner of the Winternationals flying overhead with Grumpy written on the drivers door. Also, have a picture of a white one. Do you know what color the car was that your parts came from?

Was watching the B-J auction the other night when there was a red & white 66 Grumpy's clone sold. Bill was there with this car. Just wondering if there was once a red 66 Nova that Bill campaigned? I believe this too be the one sold at B-J that was said to be a clone?

I believe the car you have pictured here is owned by Dan Miller from Scottsdale AZ. There was a white car that Bill raced after his red and white 66 was totaled in a trailering accident. I heard the white car is sitting in a salvage yard somewhere in ILLINOIS. What a find that would be!!!

I talked to Dan last summer because I am building a 66 that will look like the ORIGINAL. Dan told me he built a copy of the diecast and that his was NOT the same as the original I have been collecting some pictures of the original car and that is what I am trying to build. Dan is a nice guy and has a beautiful car. Someday I would like to see it in person. Dan had his car signed by the Grump and has gotten some info about the original car...but he (Bill) won't give up too much info:secret::sad: I tried to call Jenkins Perfomance and see if they had any pictures or anything of the original car and I was told to check out the web or buy a diecast for details.:( If ANYONE has a pic of the engine bay of the ORIGINAL car PLEASE share it with me!!!!!:D

Dave,

Here are a few pictures I have for your request. There are people more qualified for historical information on Grumpy, but he is one of my all-time favorites, too. Certainly he was very instrumental in keeping and representing Chevrolet's competitive journey from the mid-60's, forward? Another quality he possessed that I personally admire, he not only was good at building competitive cars, but was a good tuner and driver?

wasn't the white 66 really a 67 that had a 66 front clip on it so the he could run the 350hp l-79 and not the 325 hp?? I remember reading about someone doing this in 67-68, just could not remember if it was him?

I have every Hot Rod published back to 1960. If you have some idea were to look I could go unwrap it and scan the mag. I am in the process of scanning all of them but have only gotten up to 1973 so far. I also have all of the Super Chevy mags and most of the old Rod & Custom's, Car Craft's back to the eighties, Chevy High Performance, Popular Hot Rodding, to the mid nineties, old issues of Cars from 1966 to 72, and a bunch of other mags (Chevy Rumble, Kit Car). Problem is they are all wrapped up and filed away because they are so bulky (that is why I am scanning them to be able to retrieve information and share it).
