strtlegal Dec 4th, 07, 06:39 PM i have a viper t56 tranny that we pulled out of a 99 vper that has a bad bearing in it..well i thought about tearing into it, but according to some they normally build the regular t56 with viper internal's becasue they dont make the connector for the speedo...
ive been told that most kits like kielser have their trans shifters offset plus the actual gear packs have been lowered down so there is less floor pan work...
so in your dealings can you find out if i could bolt this back to my old style 383, can i just switch out to an offset shifter and piece the rest together or am i creating a monster
if it is a pita find out if you know somebody that wants a builder viper trans for a builder camaro tranny

I've never done it but from what I've been able to piece together the Keisler kit should allow you to be able to do this. If you're not sure about how to rebuild it if you go to Musclerides.com on the first page I noticed they have a step by step tutorial on how to rebuild a T-56!
Check it out! If you still want me to look I'm sure I'll know someone that is looking for a T-56. What about Joel/1972Nova? He wants a badass touring car!

strtlegal Dec 4th, 07, 08:39 PM ive talked with kiesler and they are nice guys but they are not 100% that everything will work out...i can rebuild it here at work thats not an issue, but ive been told by ats and keisler that some of externals of the viper are different...maybe i can send them mine and ill pay the difference for one of their's..lol

I can't believe that Keisler wouldn't know how to make this fit on an SBC. You need to talk to someone that's done it before. Maybe Marcus?

strtlegal Dec 4th, 07, 11:57 PM yeah ill find someone, i mean it will fit behind the sbc but nobody really supports the external hardware for the viper trans...ill find out...ill pester somebody

What external hardware does it need to mount up? Crossmember? Bellhousing?

Big Dave Dec 5th, 07, 08:20 AM Only thing I know of is a custom bell-housing since this was the first (and for a while the only available) source for these trannies. The trans tunnel surgery is not that bad. It will have to be cut out and rebuilt but that should not be as difficult as it sounds since most of the addition is in length of the hump the metal is a gentle single curve. Most production trannies have three mounting points for the internal rail shifter system to fit multiple chassis' I can not say that the 1999 Viper follows that layout.

strtlegal Dec 5th, 07, 11:36 AM thanks dave,
by external hardware i mean the speedo gear, they do not support the conversion piece that goes from electric signal to a mechnical signal. also the hydraulic throw out bearing..from what ive been told they have not set up one for a viper, so im figuring they are different compared to the normal t56
i guess ill take my time and talk with someone that knows everything...
although this is a 6 speed i may want to trade for a 5speed

For that you need to convert the rear press on helical gear for a reluctor ring and use a transducer pick up off of a late model Camaro if you want an electric speedo. To go back to a mecanical you need to find a drive gear with the same id to fit your out put shafts OD (guessing a 4L80E out of a pick-up truck).
As far as the hydraulic clutch I have seen several T-56 conversion articles were in every case the bell-housing came with the adapter plated (five pieces in all) and the hydraulic throw out bearing in the kit. Need to search Prinmedia Pulishers web site for back issues of Car Craft, Hot Rod, Super Chevy, Chevy High Performance, Popular Hotrodding, even GM High Tech magazines for the conversions as they have been in those rags a number of times.

strtlegal Dec 5th, 07, 06:07 PM well i got off the phone with tremec and i need a main shaft, a camaro extension housing and a gear selector rail...if not a newer main shaft i will have to have a custom yoke made...
ao AMP performance out of phx,az is supposed to get back with me on pricing...i guess since it need to be rebuilt anyways this should be no big deal...i guess if i go through with this i need to make sure i can use a 6speed..
