View Full Version : 63 Chevy Nova
73novaracer Sep 16th, 07, 11:05 AM I just purchased a 63 chevy Nova the vin number is 30427K147263. howvwer I cannot find a trim tag anywhere. I read that they were placed on the passenger side next to the heater blower motor. but this car was not equipped with one. where the blower motor should be was never cut out or had any type of holes to mount one. it is just a flat peice with no signs of welding or alteration. Is there any other places this could be? what can I find out about this car based on the VIN
Also if it helps any i read that no 63 novas had V8 in them, the supposidly didnt start that till 64 but my title says 8 cylinders on it, and the code in the vin for the body style doesnt come up right. mine says 27 but I cannot find a 27 listing, and that number would determine if it was a 300 or 400. my title also says nova. would it say chevy II if it was the 300 style?
Philip Sep 16th, 07, 11:20 AM Jason sounds like you have a heater delete car. I have never seen one only heard that they exist. The vin will give you some info, but the cowl tag has the options and colors.
Check here Nova Resource (http://www.novaresource.com) Scott has put together a lot of info on Novas.
Your vin doesn't appear on the breakdown list
3 = year
04= can be either a 4dr or 2 dr and either a 300 or 400 series. The specific model is determined by the next two numbers and 27 is not on the list.
K = Kansas City production plant.
The rest are sequence numbers.
73novaracer Sep 16th, 07, 11:25 AM its a 2 door car, with alot of chrome in the trunk for it and has a SS console, SS dash plate on the glove box and SS steering wheel.
Philip Sep 16th, 07, 11:31 AM The SS designation would be found on the cowl tag using the letter Z and the letter H would indicate a heater delete car.
73novaracer Sep 16th, 07, 03:00 PM only problem is I cant find the tag nor can I find holes where one would have been
Philip Sep 16th, 07, 03:41 PM That really stinks. Maybe you will get lucky and find a build sheet.
73novaracer Sep 16th, 07, 04:49 PM well I started wondering and I got out my DA and started sanding the section where the blower motor goes and low and behold there was a real good weld job and bondo job. but no tag, so Im gonna have to search for a build sheet now. if i cant find one im making a gasser out of it.
Big Dave Sep 16th, 07, 06:20 PM Welcome to the board Jason! In the past 44 years previous owners may have modified the original car cleaning up the firewall and installing a V-8. Without documentation there is no way to verify what was original from what was added (or deleted). My advise is to enjoy it as a muscle car and let your broker worry about investments.
Big Dave
73novaracer Sep 16th, 07, 06:35 PM actually Ive been on the boards a while, but thanks for the welcome. Im not really looking at it as an invesment option. I build cars to enjoy not to make money. I made a deal with my wife that if it was a true SS car I would put a chassis works kit on it and slam it with some nice rims and tires and do it up show quality for her to enjoy. and if not I was going to make a period correct gasser out of it, which someone already started with the car, it has a 55 rearend with ladder bars, inverted leafspings and holes where fenderwell headers came out. all the chrome was stripped and the holes were filled and it had a cheap paint job on it. luckily all the chrome was in the trunk. so without being able to tell what it is, I will make a gasser out of it, and keep searching for a decent SS for the wife.
would the title say 8 cyl if it had a 6? why does the vin have code 27 and yet no information on this code exists in the vin?
Philip Sep 16th, 07, 06:41 PM V8 was not available until 64, 27 for the model number in vin wasn't used until 68 and by all means continue the gasser transformation :D
73novaracer Sep 16th, 07, 06:57 PM I knew that information, but its so weird that the title and vin tag says 27, and the title says 8 cyl on it. and it has v8 mounts in it, as well the guy that I bought it from has a 63 283 and powerglide that he says he took out of the car.
Gloryhound Sep 16th, 07, 08:36 PM I could have been a car that was used for drag racing at one time and the Vin was actually removed since it was a track only car. At some point someone decided to put it on the road. You can get new VIN numbers for cars, but it is normally a PITA. I'm not sure how the different states go about it as far as giving the car numbers, but maybe your car is one of them.
73novaracer Sep 16th, 07, 09:54 PM oh and here it is also. needs some tlc.

Philip Sep 16th, 07, 10:00 PM Looks good, it will make a nice gasser
Big Dave Sep 17th, 07, 05:12 PM I'm willing to testify it isn't a SS. Go for the gasser resto.
the vin # is also located on a frame brkt around the bottom of the left frt fender. Its kinda hard to find , but its there. The other place was the frt of the left door jamb, but most of them corroded off.
