Without documentation provided by the seller there is no way to trace what you have. Some states have department of motor vehicle records that can be traced back to the original owner depending upon how many times the car was sold and if it never left the state. Once you have the names of the owners you have to play private detective and contact them to see if they still have the original Protect-o-Plate and bill of sale. They may have all of the documentation sitting in the back of a kitchen drawer, forgotten till you called and asked (or they may be homicidal maniacs who will kill you and bury you in their back yard along side the Seventh Day Adventists and door to door insurance salesmen).
Your best bet is to disassemble the car and look for a build sheet; there could be several copies stuffed in strange places (or there could be none).

Some states track the owner history and have places where you can look it up. The only problem is if your car has lived in several states.
