One uncommon source is a bad gasket seal around the heater core. Water runs down wind shield across top of firewall and drips from the top of the heater core inside the car. I discovered this when I made my own heater delete plate and attempted to reuse the old gasket goop.

Mayabe the air vent seals are rotted away and water is getting on from there!

Next time it rains, feel the pattern of wetness- if it works all the way up the carpet (from floor up to where it meets the dash) then it's prolly the heater core.

I had a bad gask. and I got a leak through there. Took me forever to figure it out :P

My 72 gets wet but only on the driver's side. I'll have to check the air vent. Also suspecting somewhere along the cowl. Haven't got around to that one yet. :D

If you smell anti freeze it wasn't the rain, its your heater core. Otherwise I think the areas are pretty well covered here. Only other thing I can think of is a drain hole is clogged in you side cowls where the vents go.

ok thanks I will check.. it actually seemes to be in the middle of the carpet. and the heater core was replaced and it doesn't smell like antifreeze, its just like you spilled a cup of water in the middle of the floor.

Was the heater box gasket replaced or reused when the core was changed? if not replaced I would check that first.

I don't know if the gasket was replaced or not since the last did or ahd it done, but it might be fixed after I first posted I didn't have kick panels in it and I have since got a pair for the AC Nova and installed them and after teh rain we had yesterday the floor was dry so Maybe it was coming thru the opening... don't know but it does seem that the water should still go somewhere right? but its not noticeable anymore so I guess its fixed for now.
Thanks for all of the suggestions

Pat the passenger side won't come out until the heat/AC box is removed and the drivers side usually requires the e brake pedal assembly come out first.

It could be the windshield seal or rust around the seal letting water in, usually taking off the kick panels isn't going to help find the problem.
