I purchased a 1 wire alternator to replace my old one and the external regulator. What is the best way to hook it up with what size wire and what do I do with the old wiring? I really dont want to cut it out.

The biggest wire that is bundled from your old wire is the only wire you need to hook up your new alternator. The only problem is that wire runs through your current mechanical voltage regulator which will create a large number of problems if left in the circuit. You will need to duplicate that size wire (8 gauge) which runs from the battery positive post to the single terminal on the back of the alternator. You can leave all existing wires in place and wrap a new wire into the harness and tape off the old (still hot wires).
